From 29995cb55f8209740b9643364c94581917f9fce7 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Tannmay-ts Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2026 22:49:00 +0530 Subject: [PATCH 1/7] feat(api): let other apps chat with Sentient through an OpenAI-compatible API POST /v1/chat/completions (with and without streaming) and GET /v1/models, off until openai_api.enabled is on, behind their own key in the keychain (POST /api/openai-api/key with the window's token). Each request's `user` gets its own named chat on the "api" channel, and only the last user message is sent. Errors use OpenAI's shape and carry x-should-retry: false, so OpenAI's SDKs don't retry a failed turn and run its tools again. Approvals for API turns and a Settings card are still open (questions in #211). A client that hangs up doesn't end the turn: it runs to the end and is saved, as in the window. diff --git a/sentient/agent/loop.py b/sentient/agent/loop.py index 6baa2505..835e1a41 100644 --- a/sentient/agent/loop.py +++ b/sentient/agent/loop.py @@ -111,6 +111,7 @@ from sentient.tools.builtin.time_tool import resolve_tz from sentient.tools.registry import ToolRegistry from sentient.tools.rules import ( + API_SOURCE, ASK, EVENT_ROLE, HAND_OFF, @@ -265,6 +266,8 @@ def history_to_openai(rows: list[dict]) -> list[dict]: content = r.get("content") or "" if r.get("attachments"): content += "\n\n(Attached earlier: " + ", ".join(r["attachments"]) + ")" + if role == "user" and r.get("name") == API_SOURCE: + content = mark_outside(content, API_SOURCE) out.append({"role": role, "content": content}) # every assistant tool call needs its reply right after it; tool messages need their call @@ -1673,7 +1676,10 @@ async def run_turn( ) -> AsyncIterator[AgentEvent]: """One chat turn. ``on_stopped`` is called with ``{message_id, memory_sources}`` of the reply kept when the turn is stopped, so the caller can send them with its own ``done`` event.""" - quick = await self._quick_plan(session_id, user_text, attachments or []) + # An authenticated app can request work, but its text is not the user's personal authorization (#211). + # Mark before any planning, and retain the mark even if the user trusts the stored chat during this turn. + api_source = await self._mark_chat(session_id, API_SOURCE) if channel == "api" else "" + quick = None if api_source else await self._quick_plan(session_id, user_text, attachments or []) if quick is not None: # a plain timer or reminder command: done now, without the model (#150) async for event in self._quick_turn(session_id, user_text, quick, channel=channel): yield event @@ -1715,10 +1721,16 @@ def release() -> list[str]: used = AnswerSources() # pages, emails, files and apps it used (#174) notes: list[dict] = [] # pieces of the user's notes put into the prompt (#354) try: - user_message_id = await self.store.add_message(session_id, "user", user_text, attachments=attachments) - if self.app is not None and hasattr(self.app, "user_seen"): + user_message_id = await self.store.add_message( + session_id, "user", user_text, attachments=attachments, name=API_SOURCE if api_source else None, + ) + if api_source: + # A trust request may have cleared the early mark before this message was stored. Requests still + allocating their named chat when Stop occurs return 409 `stopped` before starting a turn; a new explicit request + made after Stop can start normally. - Errors carry `x-should-retry: false`, so OpenAI's SDKs don't retry a failed turn and run its tools again. - The chat list marks these chats "From another app (API)", and Activity says `From another app (API), in the chat ""` for what they did. diff --git a/sentient/agent/loop.py b/sentient/agent/loop.py index 835e1a41..84604146 100644 --- a/sentient/agent/loop.py +++ b/sentient/agent/loop.py @@ -32,7 +32,7 @@ import re import time import weakref -from collections.abc import AsyncIterator, Awaitable, Callable +from collections.abc import AsyncIterator, Awaitable, Callable, Coroutine from dataclasses import dataclass, field from datetime import datetime from typing import Any @@ -567,6 +567,13 @@ def is_busy(self, session_id: str) -> bool: """True from the start of a chat turn until its last write (the final or stopped reply) is done.""" return self._busy.get(session_id, 0) > 0 + def create_turn_task(self, coro: Coroutine[Any, Any, None]) -> asyncio.Task[None]: + """Start a detached chat task owned by Stop before its first step, through its final cleanup.""" + task = asyncio.create_task(coro) + self._turn_tasks.add(task) + task.add_done_callback(self._turn_tasks.discard) + return task + def _turn_done(self, session_id: str) -> None: left = self._busy.get(session_id, 0) - 1 if left > 0: @@ -1673,6 +1680,31 @@ async def run_turn( attachments: list[str] | None = None, model: str | None = None, on_stopped: Callable[[dict], Any] | None = None, + ) -> AsyncIterator[AgentEvent]: + """One cancellable chat turn, including initialization and quick commands.""" + task = asyncio.current_task() + owns_task = task is not None and task not in self._turn_tasks + if owns_task: + self._turn_tasks.add(task) + try: + async with contextlib.aclosing(self._run_turn( + session_id, user_text, channel=channel, attachments=attachments, model=model, on_stopped=on_stopped, + )) as turn: + async for event in turn: + yield event + finally: + if owns_task: + self._turn_tasks.discard(task) + + async def _run_turn( + self, + session_id: str, + user_text: str, + *, + channel: str = "desktop", + attachments: list[str] | None = None, + model: str | None = None, + on_stopped: Callable[[dict], Any] | None = None, ) -> AsyncIterator[AgentEvent]: """One chat turn. ``on_stopped`` is called with ``{message_id, memory_sources}`` of the reply kept when the turn is stopped, so the caller can send them with its own ``done`` event.""" @@ -1696,9 +1728,6 @@ async def run_turn( steer = SteerQueue() self._steers[session_id] = steer - turn_task = asyncio.current_task() # Stop everything cancels this task (halt) - if turn_task is not None: - self._turn_tasks.add(turn_task) # the model serves this reply (and what it runs) first; background work waits until it has been quiet (#149) jobs = getattr(self.app, "model_jobs", None) turn_scope = contextlib.ExitStack() @@ -1706,8 +1735,6 @@ async def run_turn( def release() -> list[str]: turn_scope.close() - if turn_task is not None: - self._turn_tasks.discard(turn_task) if steer is None: return [] left = steer.close() @@ -2320,17 +2347,24 @@ async def _maybe_compress(self, session_id: str, *, flush: bool = True) -> None: upto = (session or {}).get("context_upto") or "" after, params = after_watermark(upto, "created_at", "rowid") # same-tick messages are not skipped (#236) rows = await self.store.fetchall( - f"SELECT rowid, role, content, created_at FROM messages WHERE session_id = ?
