BUG? WindowServer as prohibited process #624
Description
Activity
We need to know much more (see issue template!):
- What macOS version are you using?
- What SEB version?
- Which Mac model?
- Please send a SEB log file. You can search in Spotlight/Finder for org.safeexambrowser.SafeExamBrowser and zip compress the files with the date you tried it. Either attach the zip here or email to info at safeexambrowser. org
What macOS version are you using? 27.0 Beta (26A5368g)
What SEB version? 3.6.1
Which Mac model? MB Pro Apple M2 Pro 32 GB RAMApple (Developer) betas of new OS versions should be used for testing, not be used on daily use machines...
But thanks for the report, I likely have to update specific code for macOS 27, I haven't had time to do proper testing with the beta yet.

OK! I see. I needed to test some features of Beta macOS and now I can’t back to the previous one.
Please test, if SEB for macOS 3.7 (currently available is beta 1) works correctly mit macOS 27:

on Jul 13, 2026 BTW., I couldn't reproduce the issue you mentioned. SEB 3.6.1 runs without this issue on macOS 27 beta 2. I will update to developer beta 3 now to reconfirm that.
Did you try it with macOS 27 beta 2 or 3?
@danschlet Beta 3 as I remember.
With the current beta 3 it also works without issues for me. But I see the build number of this beta 3 v 2.0 as Apple calls it is different than what you indicated. Maybe they had a code signing certificate issue in the first build of beta 3.
Reacted by Damian CyntlerI had the same issue with a student device. Latest version of SEB and close to current (26.x) version of MacOS. The student has hot corners active, which thows the problem every time.
I think it will happend when you are using 3rd party keyboard input sources, such as simeji(Japanese ), Sogou input method. Wetype(z.weixin.qq.com), switch to english keyboard will reduce the potential of being prohibited
Thank you for the additional information about what exactly could trigger this. Definitely 3rd party keyboard input sources would trigger this, as some or even most of them may use auto-complete or predictive text features. For an exam admin it might be possible to add them as permitted processes at least when using the AAC Assessment (lockdown/kiosk) mode, but this needs be tested to confirm if it works.
@matthewtopp thank you for the hint about Hot Corners, now I was able to reproduce it with SEB 3.6.1 and macOS 27. This is fixed in SEB 3.7.
Thanks for investigating this. We reproduced the same
WindowServerprohibited-process block with the same exam configuration on:- macOS 26.6 (build 25G72)
- SEB 3.6 (build 156D0)
- SEB 3.6.1 (build 15726)
- Bottom-right Hot Corner configured as Quick Note
The issue reproduced in both SEB 3.6 and 3.6.1. The same configuration worked correctly with SEB 3.7b3 (build 158AC) on the same Mac.
This indicates the issue also affects macOS 26.x and SEB 3.6, not only SEB 3.6.1 on macOS 27. We have not tested other Hot Corner actions or third-party input methods.
Do you have an approximate ETA for the stable SEB 3.7 release for macOS? We need to decide what guidance to provide while the fix is only available in a pre-release build.
Reacted by Jeroen Habets and Damian CyntlerSEB 3.7 for macOS will be released later today, as it turned out to be really urgent.
Apparently, for some users already starting SEB 3.6.1 or older on macOS 26.6 triggers this red lock screen. I guess caused by some different macOS settings.

Hello!
I have a problem with SEB running on my MacBook Pro. SEB detects a normal OS process “WindowServer” as a prohibited. Why?
