Git Line Blame

Put the cursor on a line in a Git repository. The end of that line shows who last changed it, when, and the commit subject:

Alice, 2 days ago • Fix the parser

Hover the annotation for the full message and the short SHA. Uncommitted lines show Not Committed Yet.

Install

This extension is not on the Marketplace. Clone this repo, build a VSIX, and install it locally.

git clone https://github.com/ShiKaiWi/git-line-blame.git
cd git-line-blame
npm install
npm run package

That writes git-line-blame-*.vsix at the repo root.

In VS Code or Cursor: open the Extensions view, click ..., choose Install from VSIX, and pick that file.

From a terminal, pass the generated file (version matches package.json):

code --install-extension ./git-line-blame-0.1.0.vsix

On Cursor, use cursor instead of code. Reload the window if the annotation does not show up.

Requirements

  • A file on disk inside a Git working tree
  • git available on your PATH

Untitled buffers and non-file editors are ignored.

Commands

  • Git Line Blame: Toggle turns the annotation on or off

Settings

Setting Default Description
gitLineBlame.enabled true Show the current-line annotation
gitLineBlame.hideOnEmptyLines true Hide the annotation on empty or whitespace-only lines

Color: workbench.colorCustomizations → gitLineBlame.trailingLineForeground

Privacy

The extension runs git blame locally against the editor buffer. It does not send code, commits, or telemetry anywhere.

Develop

npm install

Press F5 to open an Extension Development Host, then open a committed file in a Git repo and move the cursor.

About
