TODO:

  • [] Add issue number to the commit once the issue is created (there is an Ember Inititive draft to convert into a real issue, I don't have permission to do it)

🚧 Actual draft, content is not ready to read or review 🚧

This PR corresponds to the 1/3 part of the issue #2247 about writing a WarpDrive documentation for the Ember Guides: the Migration Guide.

The audience for the Migration Guide is developers who use EmberData in their app and want to go through the key steps to migrate to WarpDrive.

This PR:

  • Reworks the index of the Upgrading guides so it's less focus on Octane edition and different type of upgrades are easier to integrate.
  • Moves the information about upgrading the Ember version to a dedicate "Version Upgrading Guide".
  • Moves the information about upgrading to Octane to a dedicate "Octane Upgrading Guide".
  • Creates a placeholder for a "Polaris Upgrading Guide" on the same model as Octane, to be consistent with the current state of Ember and include information about GJS and Vite.
  • Creates the “Warp Drive Guide” based on the example of Super Rentals.

Thank you, @BlueCutOfficial, for this guide and for your Mainmatter posts (part 1, part 2).
Your Super Rentals walkthrough was the map for the tutorial work below.

One change is coming that touches this PR.
We are moving the Ember defaults and guides to PolarisMode (useRecommendedStore), because:

  • ember-source main deprecates computed macros and mixins.
  • @warp-drive/legacy uses them, so apps that raise on deprecations fail at boot.

These PRs move the defaults:

Your steps up to store.request and the JsonSuffixHandler stay the same.
The difference is the end point: a schema with withDefaults from @warp-drive/core/reactive and useRecommendedStore, in place of useLegacyStore and Model.
Chapter 11 in #296 shows that end state for Super Rentals, if it helps for the last steps of this guide.

Thanks for the info! I need to process this a bit because the point of the migration guide is to help people using EmberData to go to WarpDrive independently of the version of Ember they use. Let's assume you have an Ember 3.28 application and you want to move to WarpDrive before managing the Ember upgrade, I am not sure if that's compatible with PolarisMode or if the LegacyMode remains a valid migration step for most people 🤔

it totally is a valid migration step!

(the updated ember blueprints can no longer use it though, because ember is deprecating the things the compat stuff / @wwarp-drive/legacy uses)
