Closes #162

What changes

A recurring task no longer forgets what it already told you. Each model run of a recurring task now gets a short section in its executor prompt:

  • What earlier runs told the user: the last 3 finished runs, each as its start time and its final answer (or result.summary when it has none), cut to 400 characters.
  • Notepad kept by earlier runs: a few lines the runs keep for each other (at most 1500 characters).
  • An instruction to report only what is new or still open, and to save the full list of items reported so far with task_notepad. The kickoff message repeats "report only what is new" because small models follow the plan's wording and look at the last message most.

Runs update the notepad with a new scoped tool, task_notepad(text) (plugin task_notepad, risk write, internal). It is offered only inside runs of recurring tasks, never in chat, and is left out of result.tools_used. The run log starts with Remembering N earlier runs and its notepad, so it reports only what is new. One-off, triggered, swarm and one-call runs are unchanged.

The user sees, edits or clears the notepad under Notes between runs on the task (new notepad field on the Task, PATCH {notepad}).

Also: the "announced but didn't do it" nudge now catches "I will now record/note ...", which qwen3:8b said instead of calling the notepad tool.

Contract: docs/API.md section 4 (Task notepad, PATCH, new "Recurring tasks remember" subsection). CHANGELOG updated.

Tests

  • tests/tasks/test_recurring_memory.py: run 2's prompt and kickoff contain run 1's answer and notepad; one-off tasks get neither; the tool refuses outside a recurring run and is never offered in chat; summary stands in when there is no final answer; only the last 3 runs, each clipped; user edit/clear of the notepad.
  • Full suite: 1360 passed, 2 skipped. Ruff clean. Desktop npm run typecheck and npm run build clean.

Real test (qwen3:8b, fresh SENTIENT_HOME, engine on 8788, Ollama lock held per run)

A recurring task (every 5 minutes, planned by qwen3:8b, then set to a one-step web plan) reads a local page I served at http://192.168.1.3:8768/news.html (Pune Library News, fictional). Run 1 was started with Run now; then I added one item to the page; run 2 was started by the scheduler 5 minutes later.

Run 1 told the user the three items and saved the notepad:

notepad after run 1: 'Reported news items from http://192.168.1.3:8768/news.html:\n- Reading room reopens on Monday\n- New Marathi poetry shelf\n- Book sale on 20 October'

Run 2's prompt (read from task_runs.messages):

**What earlier runs told the user (this task repeats; most recent last):**
- Sun 11 Oct 12:45: I have read and reported the news items from the page http://192.168.1.3:8768/news.html. Here are the details: - Reading room reopens on Monday - New Marathi poetry shelf - Book sale on 20 October ...
**Notepad kept by earlier runs:**
Reported news items from http://192.168.1.3:8768/news.html:
- Reading room reopens on Monday
- New Marathi poetry shelf
- Book sale on 20 October
**Report only what is new.** ...
[kickoff] Begin executing the plan. ... This task ran before, and the user was already told what is listed under "What earlier runs told the user". Your final answer must report only what is new since then, or say in one sentence that nothing is new.

Run 2 (scheduled, created 07:21:17Z, 5 minutes after run 1 finished at 07:16:16Z):

info Remembering 1 earlier run and its notepad, so it reports only what is new.
tool_call   web_fetch {"url": "http://192.168.1.3:8768/news.html"}
tool_call   task_notepad {"text": "Reported news items ...\n- Reading room reopens on Monday\n- New Marathi poetry shelf\n- Book sale on 20 October\n- Author talk with a local poet on 25 October"}
final_answer "The following news items are new since the last report:\n\n- Author talk with a local poet on 25 October"

So it reported only the new item and kept the full list for the next run.

What I learned on the way (two earlier rounds, same setup): with the instruction only in the system prompt, qwen3:8b had run 2's prompt with run 1's summary but still listed all four items, and once it looped on web_fetch after the notepad call. That is why the tool result now says "reply now with your final answer", the section sits right after the plan, notes use what the user was told rather than the reporter's narrative, and the kickoff repeats the rule.

Screenshots (built app, desktop/scripts/smoke.mjs, the real test's home with the user named Maya Rao)

  • Runs tab: Run Sentient is now open source #2 "Scheduled run", log shows "Remembering 1 earlier run and its notepad, so it reports only what is new.", Web fetch, Task notepad, and the final answer "The following news items are new since the last report: Author talk with a local poet on 25 October".
  • Overview: new Notes between runs card under Schedule, listing the four reported items, with the hint "Every run reads these notes and what the last few runs found, so it tells you only what's new." Edit and Clear appear on hover.

For the owner

  • The notepad tool is offered to recurring runs only. Triggered tasks (one run per event) could use it too; I left them out so each event stands alone. Easy to widen in continuity.applies.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 69a99

Recurring tasks now remember earlier runs. If a run stops after saving notes but before reporting, a later run may skip an item the user never saw. This is an edge case that users can correct by editing the notepad, so it is mergeable with owner awareness.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 69a99

Saved information from outside sources can lose its safety classification when reused, allowing later background work to act without the confirmation normally required. Exposure remains limited by the affected task’s existing access and safety restrictions.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Recurring memory creates a durable route for outside instructions to evade the existing outside-content approval hold. If hostile content is copied into a notepad or prior answer, a later run incorporates it into its system message without restoring its trust classification. An already-available outbound action can then proceed before a fresh external read, unless another independent restriction blocks it.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An outside-content attacker would need a recurring task to ingest their content and preserve an instruction in remembered text. Persistence is task-local, but downstream effects can reach data and connected services accessible through that task’s selected tools and core helpers. No arbitrary cross-task selection or new credential authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The introduced attack path is cross-run provenance loss: outside content influences an answer or notepad, that text is reused as system-message content, and a later run starts without the original outside-content classification. If the model follows the stored instruction and invokes an otherwise permitted outbound capability before another external read, the outside-content approval hold is not activated. Exploit success was not tested.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing authenticated Task API remains the user-edit entrypoint. Its router requires the gateway token, whose validation is unchanged from the PR base. The new field does not introduce an unauthenticated PATCH route.
  • observed — Tool allowlists, Never rules, read-only connection checks, and Ask rules still constrain execution. Reading outside content during a run restores ctx.untrusted and the outbound hold. Continuity text alone does not restore that classification, and clipping limits size rather than authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Clearing saved notes is not a complete revocation mechanism for an active or checkpointed run. A run can still hold previously loaded text and later replace the notepad; retries and interrupted-run recovery can reuse the earlier transcript. This limits containment of poisoned memory, although post-cancellation write timing was not validated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve outside-content provenance alongside remembered answers and notepad text, and restore the approval classification before subsequent model execution. Present remembered text as bounded data rather than instructions; separation should complement, not replace, enforcement.
  • proposed — Define explicit recovery semantics for clearing potentially poisoned memory. Consider version-fenced run writes, active-run validation, and an intentional reset operation that addresses saved notes, remembered answers, and resumable checkpoints without allowing stale execution to restore cleared context.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

Each run of a recurring task gets a compact note of what its last three
runs found (result summary, or final answer while the report is pending)
and the task's notepad, with an instruction to report only what is new.
Runs keep the notepad with the scoped task_notepad tool; the user can see,
edit or clear it under Notes between runs.

Commit reported-item notes only after a final answer.

If an eligible run calls task_notepad and then fails or is cancelled before its final answer, the tool has already saved its note. The next run reads that note and may omit an item the user was never told about. Keep the replacement pending until the run records its final answer, or distinguish unreported notes from reported items in the next prompt. As per coding guidelines, “Keep task lifecycle validation and orchestration in task-domain code.”
