Closes #157

What changes

Quiet monitors. Check scripts (script jobs, which is also what Hermes monitor_script jobs become) get a new kind of check, noteworthy, shown as Tell me when something important changes:

  1. Each check compares the script's result with the last one deterministically (canonical JSON, same as changed). An unchanged result makes no model call and sends nothing.
  2. Only when the result differs, the fast role judges a line diff (only the changed lines, - removed / + added, at most 3000 characters, plus the task's name, description and the user's own request). It names the change first, then answers {"change": "...", "noteworthy": bool}.
  3. true: one notification whose message is the judge's sentence (or, for Run the task, a run whose trigger_event_data.message is that sentence). false: nothing is sent. Either way the new result is the next baseline. A judge with no usable answer counts as true with the usual change message, so a change is never lost.

Check history. Every script job now keeps script.checks, its last 30 checks: baseline, nothing_new, changed, minor (changed, not worth telling), alert, quiet, reported, failed. A run of quiet checks folds into one entry with count and last_at, so a 5-minute monitor stays readable. The Runs tab of a watch shows them under Checks ("Checked, nothing new · 2 times", "Something changed, but not enough to tell you", "Something changed. You were told").

Fuzzy windows. A daily or weekly schedule can carry window: morning (7-10), afternoon (12-16), evening (17-20), night (20-23). It runs at a random minute inside the next window that has not started yet (so a run inside today's window is not repeated today). The task-creation prompt sets it for "every weekday morning"; a window the request never names is dropped (qwen3:8b added "morning" to "every 5 minutes" in the real test, so this guard is deterministic). The schedule editor has a time-of-day picker ("At a set time", "In the morning (7 to 10 am)", ...).

Small-model fixes found in the real test: the planner prompt now says a check script runs once per check (never loop or sleep) and that Sentient compares results itself for changed/noteworthy (qwen3:8b wrote a while True: ... time.sleep(300) script and a script that compared a file with itself).

Contract: docs/API.md sections 4 (schedule window, "Fuzzy windows") and 16 (noteworthy, checks, PATCH semantics). CHANGELOG updated. Hermes import is unchanged (monitor_script still becomes changed, no model).

Tests

  • tests/tasks/test_quiet_monitors.py: an unchanged source makes no model call, no notification and folds quiet checks; a change that matters sends exactly one notification naming it, and the judge sees only the changed line; a change the judge calls minor is recorded and not sent; a judge without an answer still reports; noteworthy + Run the task starts one run only when it matters; other conditions keep a history; history is bounded and switching changed ↔ noteworthy keeps the baseline; diff/verdict helpers; fuzzy windows land inside their range across 200 picks, skip today's started window, work weekly; an unknown window is dropped; a window the user never named is dropped.
  • Full suite on this branch rebased on main: 1382 passed, 2 skipped. Ruff clean. Desktop typecheck, build and npm test clean.

Real test (qwen3:8b, fresh SENTIENT_HOME, engine on 8788, Ollama lock held for the checks)

Created from chat-style text: "Every 5 minutes, check http://192.168.1.3:8768/news.html and tell me only when something important is added." The planner made a script job; I set the script to a plain fetch (result(tools.web_fetch(url=...)['content'])), the condition to Tell me when something important changes and the schedule to every 5 minutes, then ran checks while editing the local page. Model calls are counted from the engine's model job start lines.

[check 1, first look] model calls: 0; notifications: 0; history: baseline
[check 2, page unchanged] model calls: 0; notifications: 0; history: nothing_new
[check 3, page unchanged] model calls: 0; notifications: 0; history: nothing_new, count 2
[check 6, page unchanged] model calls: 0; notifications: 0; history: nothing_new
[check 7, only the view counter changed] model calls: 1; notifications: 0; history: minor "Page views increased"
[check 8, a new event was added] model calls: 1; notifications: 1; history: changed "Children's story hour event was added"
notification: title='Monitor News Page for Updates' message="Children's story hour event was added" event=script_alert

Earlier round (before the judge prompt named counters and put "change" before the verdict): an added item gave one notification "Author talk with a local poet on 25 October was added", but a page-view bump also notified ("Page views increased from 1200 to 1287"). That is why the judge prompt now lists counters explicitly, names the change first, and sees the user's own words.

Screenshots (built app, desktop/scripts/smoke.mjs, the real test's home, user Maya Rao)

  • Runs tab of the monitor: "Checks 8 · Newest first. Quiet checks don't send you anything." Rows, newest first: "Something changed. You were told / Children's story hour event was added", muted "Something changed, but not enough to tell you / Page views increased", muted "Checked, nothing new", ..., muted "Checked, nothing new · 2 times" with a from-to time, muted "First check, saved as the starting point".
  • Overview: "Let me know" now offers "Tell me when something important changes" (selected) above "Tell me when anything changes"; Last result tile and the 3-line script.
  • Fuzzy window: a watch set to weekdays + morning reads "Every weekday in the morning, between 7 and 10 am", next run "tomorrow at 8:56 AM".
  • Notifications: one card per real change, message is the judge's sentence; no cards for the unchanged checks.

For the owner

  • noteworthy is opt-in; changed keeps reporting every difference with no model, as before. Should the planner prefer noteworthy by default for page/news watches? Its prompt now describes both and suggests noteworthy for pages, news and lists.
  • This branch and feat(tasks): recurring tasks remember their last runs #292 both touch CHANGELOG.md, docs/API.md section 4 and desktop/src/lib/types.ts; whichever merges second needs a small rebase.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a “noteworthy” check option that uses AI to decide whether a change merits an alert.
    • Added check history to task details, including outcomes, notes, repeat counts, and timestamps.
    • Daily and weekly tasks can now run at a randomized time within a selected morning, afternoon, evening, or night window.
  • Documentation
    • Updated task scheduling and script-check documentation to cover these options.

A new noteworthy check compares each result with the last one without a
model, so an unchanged source costs nothing and stays silent. When the
result differs, the fast model judges a line diff and the job notifies
once, naming the change, only when it matters. Every script job keeps a
short history of checks, shown quietly under Runs, and daily or weekly
schedules can use fuzzy windows (morning, afternoon, evening, night).

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4f377

Quiet monitors let watched content influence whether a change is reported. Manipulated content could suppress an important notification. Existing execution restrictions limit the impact, but they do not protect this new reporting decision.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new noteworthy gate mixes watched source text with the judgment request without an explicit instruction/data boundary. An author controlling content included in the diff could influence a valid false verdict, suppressing the notification or follow-up run. The result then becomes the baseline, so unchanged subsequent checks do not reconsider that suppressed change. This is an inferred reporting-integrity attack path, not a demonstrated exploit or direct privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently attackable surface is an approved noteworthy monitor whose returned value includes attacker-controlled content. Source control could affect that monitor's reporting decision and whether its existing follow-up task runs. The inspected path does not establish access to unrelated tasks, other users, credentials, or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Attacker-authored instructions included in changed source lines could steer the judgment toward a syntactically valid false result. That result bypasses the unusable-answer fallback, records the change as minor, and advances the baseline. The resulting suppression path is new relative to deterministic changed checks; successful manipulation has not been experimentally verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The judgment has no tool access. For follow-up runs, its message and the script result enter existing trigger data. The executor marks that data as outside content by default and adds an instruction to treat outside content as information rather than authority. Those downstream controls are unchanged by this PR and do not protect the earlier suppression decision.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Checks serialize under a process-local per-task lock, and successful decisions now reject settings edits observed before commit. Failure handling still validates only code before saving state and notifying from the original task snapshot. The analogous failure-settings race predates the PR; check history is newly added to that path. These checks do not establish atomic protection against edits after validation or cross-process execution.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate watched content explicitly from instructions in the judgment input, apply the existing outside-content treatment there, and evaluate adversarial diffs that request notification suppression. Keep deterministic reporting available where missed changes are unacceptable; content marking alone should not be treated as a guaranteed defense.

Discard failed checks after a condition or action edit.

If the user edits condition or then while the sandbox runs, _save_script_state still accepts the failed check because the code is unchanged. The service records the old check's failure in the edited script and can send a script_failed notification. Apply the same settings comparison used by the successful-check path before recording or notifying about a failure. This also brings the failure path into line with the edit behavior documented in docs/API.md at Line 1868.
