Closes #236

Summary

Rows saved at the same moment share a created_at/updated_at. Two fixes:

Tie-breaks. Every place that orders messages, facts or summaries by time now breaks ties by rowid (or facts.id): the chat's outside-content classification, messages_between (history time search), the memory graph, user-model facts and summaries, and profile upkeep's fact and summary reads. recent_messages already had it (#235).

Watermarks (store.db.after_watermark / next_watermark): the mark is the newest timestamp read plus the ids read at it, not the wall clock.

 profile upkeep (evolution.update_profile)
- since = last run's wall-clock time
- SELECT ... WHERE updated_at > since
+  mark  = meta evolution.profile_facts_mark  {"at": <newest updated_at read>, "ids": [ids read at it]}
+ SELECT ... WHERE updated_at > at OR (updated_at = at AND id NOT IN ids) ORDER BY updated_at, id
+ save next_watermark(mark, rows) (same for summaries: evolution.profile_summaries_mark)

 chat compression (Agent._maybe_compress)
- context_upto = created_at of the last folded message; WHERE created_at > context_upto
+ context_upto = the same watermark over (created_at, rowid)
  • A plain timestamp (an older build's context_upto, or the 30-day starting point) still means "strictly newer", so existing data keeps working.
  • profile_last_run still decides when upkeep runs. It no longer decides what upkeep reads.
  • Not in this PR (same kind of watermark, left alone to keep this small): the user-model refresh (user_model.last_refresh_at with > since) and the evolution session review (activity_at).

Evidence

Tests (tests/test_same_timestamp.py) freeze now_iso so every row shares one timestamp:

test old code this PR
compression: 12 messages saved in the same tick as the last summary are folded next time FAIL (assert 1 == 2, nothing folded) pass
profile upkeep: a fact saved in the same tick after upkeep read is learned next run FAIL (updated is False) pass
30 same-tick messages come back in insertion order (recent_messages, messages_between) pass pass
watermark helper (legacy timestamp, merging ids, empty read) n/a pass

The old clock_passes workaround in test_profile_upkeep_appends_without_clobbering is removed: it waited out the clock tick to dodge exactly this bug. Full suite: 1358 passed, 2 skipped; ruff clean.

Real test. Engine from this branch on its own fresh SENTIENT_HOME (port 8787), driven over REST and WS /ws, with claude-code/sonnet as primary and qwen3:8b as fast (Ollama lock held).

  1. Profile upkeep.
    • Wrote 24 facts with POST /api/memories in concurrent pairs. Upkeep run 1 logged facts_considered: 23 (one write was an UPDATE). It saved profile_facts_mark = {"at": "07:10:21.926067", "ids": [23]}, the newest fact it read, not the run's clock time (07:13:09.304617).
    • Imported a note (POST /api/memories/import, 10 held facts), then approved them in one burst (POST /api/memories/review/approve-all).
    • To recreate the race against the running engine, inserted two facts straight into its database. One was stamped exactly at the mark (07:10:21.926067, the same timestamp as fact 23, which upkeep had already read). The other was stamped exactly at run 1's time (07:13:09.304617). This is what a fact saved in the same tick right after upkeep's read looks like. Old code (updated_at > '07:13:09.304617') skips both.
    • Upkeep run 2 (GET /api/skills/evolution-log): {"learned_appended": 9, "facts_considered": 11, ...}. 11 = 9 approved long-term facts (fact 26 is short-term, which upkeep skips by design) + both same-tick facts. The new mark is {"at": "07:23:39.329581", "ids": [24]}. Across runs 23 + 11 = 34 = every active long-term fact, none read twice.
    • I had to set evolution.profile_update_hours: 1 and rewind profile_last_run by 2 h between runs so upkeep would run again. The machine was on battery, so models.background_on_battery: true was needed for upkeep's model call.
  2. Message order. chat.send followed by a burst of 12 chat.steer on one socket, run twice. In run 2, steers 05 and 06 were stored with the same created_at (07:28:45.712675, rowids 20 and 21). GET /api/sessions/{id}/messages, read 3 times, returned steer 01 ... steer 12 in send order every time, in both runs.

Note: on this Windows machine, Python's clock had microsecond resolution, so same-timestamp rows were rarer through the API than #236 assumed (the concurrent fact writes all got distinct timestamps). They still happened in the steer burst.

Merge Danger

Door: mostly two-way. No schema change, and the two new meta keys are ignored by older builds. One catch: sessions.context_upto now holds JSON for chats this build compresses. If you roll back, an older build compares created_at > '{"at": ...', which is never true, so it stops compressing those chats (they keep their existing summary; nothing is lost). Clearing context_upto on those rows fixes it.

Blast Radius: memory upkeep. Profile upkeep, chat compression and the order of a few internal history reads change; chat, tasks and the API contract are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Messages and memories saved at the same time are now processed consistently, preventing new information from being missed during chat summaries and profile updates.
    • Long-chat summaries now include messages saved at the same time as the previous summary.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds timestamp-and-ID watermarks for message compression and profile upkeep. It adds tie-break ordering for message, fact, and summary reads, with regression tests for records saved at the same timestamp.

Changes

Same-Timestamp Reads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Watermark format and helpers
sentient/store/db.py, tests/test_same_timestamp.py
New helpers parse and advance timestamp-and-ID watermarks. Tests cover legacy timestamps, IDs at tied timestamps, newer timestamps, and empty reads.
Message ordering and compression
sentient/agent/loop.py, sentient/memory/episodic.py, sentient/store/schema.sql, tests/test_same_timestamp.py, CHANGELOG.md
Message reads use rowid to break timestamp ties. Compression selects messages after a watermark and advances its cursor with the processed messages. The schema comment and changelog describe the watermark and same-timestamp fixes.
Profile upkeep and memory ordering
sentient/evolution/service.py, sentient/memory/facts.py, sentient/memory/usermodel.py, tests/evolution/test_evolution.py, tests/test_same_timestamp.py
Profile upkeep tracks facts and summaries with separate watermarks. Fact and summary reads use deterministic tie ordering. Tests cover same-timestamp profile updates and remove the wall-clock wait.

Merge Risk | 🔵 Low · up to b9084

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b9084

A failed profile refresh can advance its source marks and leave MEMORY.md stale on later ordinary upkeep runs. The source facts remain stored, so this is a bounded risk, but the retry behavior deserves owner awareness or follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b9084

The ordering fixes preserve the inspected privacy and approval checks. The main design risk is rollback: an older version cannot correctly read the new saved chat positions without converting or resetting them.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · inferred: Rolling back to the PR base with the upgraded database stalls compression for sessions containing JSON context_upto values. The older reader compares created_at directly against that JSON string, so ordinary ISO timestamps do not qualify. Recent chat history remains available, but the running summary stops advancing until the cursor is converted or reset.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed data flow affects session summaries and the application's profile-memory files in its local store. Compression remains session-scoped. Recovering previously skipped same-timestamp rows increases content completeness but does not itself grant another principal access or additional tool permissions.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — User and assistant content is summarized and inserted into the system prompt under earlier conversation context, without a distinct untrusted annotation on that summary. This path predates the PR. The head includes previously skipped same-timestamp rows, but direct tool-result rows remain excluded and the inspected authority checks remain separate from summary text; these facts do not establish a new control bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Outside-content classification still scans stored tool results and persists a session marker. Adding rowid ordering does not remove that marker. Marked sessions still require user approval or hold outbound calls, and profile upkeep continues applying its clean-summary condition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Compression advances its cursor only after summary generation and writes the cursor with the summary in one update. Background compression remains independently spawned with an unconditional update, so overlapping executions can overwrite stale state; that ownership limitation exists in both base and head. Deployment-level serialization was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit rollback procedure that restores timestamp-compatible chat cursors together with their summaries, or preserve a legacy-compatible position separately. Include upgrade-and-downgrade checks using a database that has already received JSON cursors.

Rows saved in the same clock tick (Windows moves its clock every 15.6 ms) share
a timestamp. Ordering of messages, facts and summaries now breaks ties by rowid
or id. Profile upkeep and chat compression keep a watermark of the newest
timestamp read plus the ids read at it (store.db.after_watermark /
next_watermark), so a row saved in the same tick after a read is picked up
next time instead of skipped.

Recover legacy timestamp cursors before compression advances them

A pre-upgrade sessions.context_upto value is a plain timestamp. after_watermark() intentionally turns that value into created_at > context_upto. Therefore, compression excludes unread messages created at exactly the legacy timestamp.

If a later compression run reads newer messages and updates context_upto, the omitted messages remain permanently unread. Handle the legacy timestamp in the compression consumer with an explicit recovery policy before advancing the cursor. Do not change after_watermark() globally: the helper cannot know which same-timestamp messages the old compression run already folded, so an unconditional inclusive read could fold messages twice. The consumer must migrate or replay the legacy boundary while preserving the folded-message state.
