What

Incognito chats. A chat you can use without it shaping anything later. The engine enforces it; the window just starts it, shows it and closes it.

Engine (sessions.incognito)

  • Start one with incognito: true on chat.send / POST /api/chat, or POST /api/sessions?incognito=true. It can't be switched later.
  • Nothing is learned from it: no fact extraction after a turn, no memory flush when it's compressed, and no chat.turn_completed event, so skill review and repair, the user model and dreaming never hear of it. Skill views in it don't count as skill use.
  • memory_remember and skill_save are not offered, and refuse if they're called anyway. The refusal checks the chat itself (ToolContext.is_incognito()), so helpers it starts are covered too. Nothing is stored, not even held for review. (The loop also rejects tools it didn't offer.)
  • It's left out of keyword search (/api/sessions/search, memory_search_history), conversation summaries, history_time_search, the user model's evidence and skill review (NOT_INCOGNITO in store/db.py).
  • Reading memory: my call is yes by default, said plainly in the UI. chat.incognito_uses_memory (Settings > General > Conversations) turns it off. When it's off, the prompt gets no profile, memory file, daily notes, facts or insights, and the memory look-up tools aren't offered and return nothing. The prompt also tells the model the chat is incognito, so it doesn't promise to remember things.
  • Deleted when closed: the window deletes it when you leave it. The new IncognitoSweeper service deletes every incognito chat at start and at shutdown, and one with no new message for chat.incognito_delete_after_minutes (default 30). Each engine deletion publishes session.deleted.
  • GET /api/sessions/{id}/messages now returns 404 for a chat that doesn't exist. The window already had a "This chat doesn't exist anymore" state for that, but it never showed because the route returned [].

Desktop

  • Entry points: a spy-icon button next to New chat, "New incognito chat" in the command palette, Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N, and #/chat?incognito=1.
  • A new incognito chat opens on an intro that explains it in three lines: nothing is remembered, it can (or can't) use what Sentient already knows, and it's deleted when you leave.
  • In the chat itself: a tinted header with a spy icon and an "Incognito" badge, plus a line above the composer. There's a new --incognito color token for light and dark themes.
  • Incognito chats are kept out of the sidebar list and the palette's recent chats. Leaving one (navigating anywhere else) stops its reply and deletes it. session.deleted removes a chat from the cache and refetches its transcript.

docs/API.md (chat.send, sessions, session.deleted, the incognito rules) and CHANGELOG updated.

Tests

  • tests/test_incognito.py has 8 tests:
    • a turn learns nothing (no extraction, no chat.turn_completed, write tools not offered), with a normal-chat control
    • the tools refuse, including from a helper's context
    • a model calling memory_remember anyway stores nothing
    • with memory off, nothing is read
    • search, summaries, history_time_search, user-model evidence and skill review all exclude incognito chats
    • the sweeper handles idle chats and a full purge, and leftovers are deleted at start
    • gateway: create over WS and REST, the list flag, search, delete, and the 404
  • Full suite: 1362 passed, 2 skipped. Ruff clean. npm run typecheck and npm run build clean.

Real test (engine from this branch, fresh SENTIENT_HOME, port 8786)

The script sends the same personal fact in an incognito chat, waits 45 s, checks memories and the review inbox, deletes the chat (as the window does), asks a normal chat, then runs a control fact in a normal chat. An empty incognito chat was also left idle with incognito_delete_after_minutes: 1.

Log: incognito chat 4ecc267f...: nothing learned from this turn; chat a455bf5e...: fact extraction started for the normal chat; deleted 1 incognito chat(s) from the idle sweep.

Built app (npm run build, seeded with Maya Rao, claude-code/sonnet, driven over the DevTools protocol):

  • #/chat?incognito=1: the intro shows a spy icon, "Incognito chat" and the three plain lines ("Sentient can still use what it already knows about you."). The spy button sits next to New chat.
  • After sending, the header is tinted violet with the spy icon and an "Incognito" badge, and the line above the composer reads "Incognito: nothing here is remembered, and the chat is deleted when you leave it." The chat is not in the sidebar.
  • After leaving to Memory and coming back to its URL: "This chat doesn't exist anymore". In the app's database the session and its messages are gone, and an FTS search for the name finds nothing.
  • A new normal chat asked "Where did my sister move, and what's the name of the dog I'm adopting?" searched memory and replied "I don't have any record of your sister moving or a dog you're adopting".

Review rounds (CodeRabbit, two rounds, all Major findings fixed)

  • Round 1:
    • The sweep waits until a reply's last write is done (Agent.is_busy), and the shutdown purge runs after replies and background work have finished.
    • Deleting a chat cancels its helpers first (SentientApp.delete_chat), and helpers keep the incognito flag.
    • Incognito without memory leaves the configured name and location out of the prompt.
    • The window closes an incognito chat the engine names after the user has already left it, and keeps it marked until the engine confirms the delete.
  • Round 2:
    • The busy count ends in a finally, also when the stream is closed at Done.
    • delete_chat stops the chat's running replies first (Agent.cancel_session).
    • Helpers of a no-memory incognito chat don't get the user's name.
  • Re-checked:
    • Built app: leaving a new incognito chat right after sending (before the engine names it) leaves no incognito row in the database. The engine log shows that turn's memory look-up started at 11:50:59, so the chat did exist.
    • claude-code/sonnet: deleting an incognito chat while its reply was streaming returned Stopped., then done cancelled: true. Its transcript is a 404 and there is no foreign-key error in the log.
    • Full suite: 1368 passed, 2 skipped.

Notes for the owner

  • Reading memory in incognito is on by default. Flip chat.incognito_uses_memory if you'd rather match Claude's incognito, which doesn't use memory either.
  • Work an incognito chat explicitly starts outside itself still exists after it's deleted: a task you ask for, or a file it writes. Long tool results saved under files/outputs/ stay too. These are things you asked for, not learning, but tell me if they should be cleaned up as well.

Closes #154

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Start an incognito chat from the New chat button, command palette, or Mod+Shift+N. A distinct header and introductory notice identify incognito chats.
    • Incognito chats are excluded from chat history, search, saved-memory updates, and skill learning. Existing knowledge may still be used unless disabled in Settings.
    • Incognito chats are deleted when you leave them or close Sentient, or after the configured idle period, which defaults to 30 minutes. Active replies are allowed to finish.

…losed

An incognito chat saves no memories (no fact extraction, no memory flush,
memory_remember and skill_save refuse), raises no chat.turn_completed, and is
left out of summaries, keyword search, the user model and skill review. The
window deletes it when the user leaves it; the engine deletes leftovers at
start and shutdown and idle ones after chat.incognito_delete_after_minutes.
Reading memory follows chat.incognito_uses_memory.

Walkthrough

This change adds incognito chats across the desktop and backend. It adds creation controls, configurable access to existing memory, exclusions from learning and search, and deletion when a chat is closed, the engine stops, or the inactivity limit is reached.

Changes

Incognito chats

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session contract and creation
desktop/src/lib/types.ts, desktop/src/lib/api.ts, sentient/config/schema.py, sentient/store/*, sentient/gateway/*, desktop/src/stores/chat.ts, docs/API.md
Session types, settings, persistence, and gateway creation paths now support incognito status. Desktop and gateway requests can create incognito sessions.
Incognito turn and data policy
sentient/agent/loop.py, sentient/tools/*, sentient/evolution/service.py, sentient/memory/*, sentient/store/db.py, tests/test_incognito.py
Incognito turns skip fact extraction and completion events. Memory and skill tools follow the configured memory setting, while search, episodic-memory, user-model, and review queries exclude incognito sessions.
Incognito session deletion
sentient/agent/incognito.py, sentient/agent/loop.py, sentient/agent/subagents.py, sentient/app.py, sentient/gateway/routes/core.py, desktop/src/App.tsx, desktop/src/stores/chat.ts, desktop/src/lib/events.ts, tests/test_incognito.py, docs/API.md
The desktop requests deletion when a user leaves an incognito chat. The engine cancels session work, purges sessions at startup and shutdown, and sweeps for inactivity. Deletion events update desktop caches.
Desktop controls and display
desktop/src/components/shell/*, desktop/src/features/chat/*, desktop/src/styles/globals.css, desktop/src/features/settings/sections.ts, CHANGELOG.md
The desktop adds incognito chat entry points and a shortcut, visual indicators and explanatory text, and filters incognito chats from history and recent-chat lists.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 543c6

A chat started just before switching to another new incognito chat can remain until a later cleanup. This narrow gap should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to d2396

Incognito privacy does not hold across all interruption and deletion paths. Chats can remain stored beyond the idle timeout, and concurrent deletion can allow chat contents to be remembered afterward. Disabling memory also does not consistently exclude configured personal information.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new idle-deletion guarantee depends on a busy counter that is not cleaned up on every terminal path. The final Done yield is outside the cancellation and GeneratorExit handlers, and final persistence and postprocessing are also outside them. Closing at that yield or failing in these operations can leave the chat permanently busy for periodic sweeping, retaining its private transcript until explicit deletion or process lifecycle cleanup.
  • Medium · security · observed: Memory-disabled incognito suppresses the configured user name in the primary request, but delegated work independently constructs a request containing that name. The helper context is initialized before model execution, so this is a policy-construction bypass rather than an early request before flag assignment. The underlying name-injection path predates the PR; its continued use defeats the new privacy exclusion contract. Broader automatic facts or profile disclosure was not established.
  • High · security · inferred: Deletion cancels a snapshot of existing helpers but does not fence the parent turn or subsequent delegation. A turn can already have persisted and yielded a delegation call when an authenticated deletion removes its session. If execution then continues, delegation forwards the session ID but not the parent's latched incognito status; the new helper rereads the missing session as non-incognito. Its memory tools can consequently read or remember data despite the original chat's privacy policy. This concurrency path is inferred from source ordering, not runtime-reproduced. Existing deletion concurrency becomes security-relevant because this PR makes the removable session row an authority for privacy enforcement.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is sessions and configured personal data within one application instance. Direct API reachability requires its gateway token. The deletion race can extend effects from one chat into shared conversational memory and surviving helper records; no cross-tenant, infrastructure-credential, or elevated operating-system authority path was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained terminal-cleanup finding is supported by source: cancellation while delivering the final Done can close a generator suspended outside its cleanup handlers. A leaked counter keeps that session ineligible for every periodic sweep. Explicit deletion and shutdown purge remain recovery paths.
  • observed — The retained helper disclosure finding is bounded to independently constructed request contents, including the configured user name. Assigning incognito before model execution and enforcing memory tools does not remove information already assembled into that request. Evidence does not justify broadening this to automatic stored-fact disclosure.
  • inferred — An authorized caller can delete an incognito session while its parent turn is between the persisted delegation call and tool execution. A subsequently created helper can lose the privacy flag through the missing-row lookup. In approval modes permitting internal writes, memory_remember can persist supplied chat data before the parent encounters any later foreign-key failure. This interleaving remains statically inferred.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Helpers inherit origin and untrusted-content status, cannot recursively delegate, and reject send/execute risks and operations requiring approval. These controls limit downstream authority but do not uniformly prohibit internal memory writes when privacy identity has been lost.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal helper cancellation records a cancelled terminal state, restart marks running records as errors, and background reporting checks that the session still exists. Desktop exit requests cancellation before deletion. These are meaningful recovery controls, but neither a client cancellation request nor a snapshot of existing helpers fences new work at the backend deletion boundary.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give each turn exactly-once cleanup spanning final persistence, final-event delivery, and postprocessing; make privacy policy an inherited execution property rather than deriving it solely from a removable session row; fence new delegation during deletion and confirm terminal cleanup before acknowledging completion. Apply the same memory-disabled input policy to primary and delegated requests.
