Closes #151

What changed

Engine (sentient/backup/)

  • Back up the whole data folder to one zip: sentient.db copied with SQLite's online backup API while the engine runs (never a raw copy of the live WAL file), config.yaml, workspace/, skills/, files/ and tls/. Never inside: keychain secrets, gateway.token, logs, the browser profile, WhatsApp's link, voice models, scratch folders, the backups folder. The manifest records counts (chats, memories, tasks, skills) and the sign-ins that live in the keychain.
  • Restore in two steps so nothing is swapped under the running engine: POST /api/backups/restore checks the archive (manifest, every name stays inside the listed items, SQLite quick_check) and unpacks it to backups/restore-pending; the next engine start (gateway lifespan, before config and database open) applies it. It takes a snapshot of the current data first, replaces exactly the items the manifest lists, and puts everything back if a move fails. The result (including which sign-ins need redoing, checked live) is shown until dismissed.
  • Snapshots (backups without files/, newest backups.snapshots_keep kept, all restorable): when the database's PRAGMA user_version differs from the new SCHEMA_VERSION (an existing DB on this build gets one on first start), before the first ensure_column that really adds a column to an existing DB (safety net), before a Hermes import, and before a restore. A failed snapshot is logged and never blocks startup.
  • Where backups go: Documents/Sentient Backups by default, outside the data folder so a backup survives losing it (Windows: the Known Folder API's Documents via SHGetKnownFolderPath/FOLDERID_Documents through ctypes, so a folder redirected to OneDrive is used rather than a stale ~/Documents, falling back to ~/Documents; macOS ~/Documents; Linux XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR or ~/Documents). Falls back to <home>/backups when Documents is missing or can't be written to. Snapshots, a staged restore and the restore result stay in <home>/backups. SENTIENT_DOCUMENTS_DIR overrides Documents; every test sets it, and an autouse guard in tests/conftest.py fails any test that changes the real ~/.sentient/backups, ~/Documents/Sentient Backups or (on Windows) the known Documents folder's Sentient Backups.
  • Cloud-synced folders: the overview's folder_cloud names OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud when the backup folder is inside one (the OneDrive, OneDriveConsumer and OneDriveCommercial environment variables, plus path segments), and the Backup folder row says "This folder syncs to OneDrive, so your backups (chats, memory, the device certificate) are copied to the cloud too." with Choose... as before.
  • Complete or not made: if any file can't be read (open in another program), the backup fails with a plain message naming it instead of publishing a partial archive, since a restore replaces whole folders.
  • Scheduled backups: backups.schedule off/daily/weekly, backups.keep (only automatic ones are pruned).
  • REST: GET/POST /api/backups, POST /api/backups/inspect, POST/DELETE /api/backups/restore, DELETE /api/backups/last-restore; event backup.updated. CLI: sentient backup [--to], sentient restore FILE [--now]. docs/API.md section 20, CHANGELOG.

Desktop

  • New Settings > Backups: Back up now (or to another folder), backup folder chooser, backup list with Restore, Restore from a file, the snapshot list, and automatic backup settings. Restore opens a confirmation with what is in the backup, that the current data is snapshotted first, and a plain note that sign-ins are not in backups with the list to redo elsewhere; then it restarts the engine and reloads the window. Waiting-restore and restore-result banners.
  • The Back up section says a backup holds the certificate your devices trust, so keep backups somewhere private. The folder row says where backups go and why (Documents, or the data-folder fallback with a hint to pick another folder).
  • Bridge kept minimal: pickFiles gained typed filters (for .zip), and a new showInFolder(path) opens a folder or selects a Sentient backup zip in its folder (never opens or runs a file) for the Open button.

Real test (engine from this worktree, port 8789, fresh Maya Rao seeded home, random token)

  1. Back up now (POST /api/backups): sentient-backup-20261011-110629.zip, 176 KB, counts {chats: 13, memories: 60, tasks: 20, skills: 11}, top-level entries config.yaml, files, manifest.json, sentient.db, skills, workspace (no logs, token, WAL files). sign_ins listed Anthropic, OpenRouter, Google Calendar, GitHub, Telegram (labels only, read as present/absent).
  2. Changed data after the backup: deleted memories 48 "Maya has a ginger cat named Biscuit" and 34 "Maya's mother's birthday is on 2 November", deleted task demo-completed ("Make a 10-week half marathon plan"), deleted chat "Sunrise hike at Nandi Hills", renamed chat demo-chat-main to "CHANGED AFTER BACKUP", added files/after-backup.txt. Listing showed 58 facts, 19 tasks, 12 chats.
  3. Restore: POST /api/backups/inspect then POST /api/backups/restore → {staged: true, restart_required: true}, pending_restore set. Engine stopped hard (like the desktop's restart, so the old -wal was still on disk) and started again. Log:
    sentient.backup.archive: restored a backup made 2026-10-11T05:36:29 ... / restore result: {"error": null, "snapshot": "sentient-snapshot-20261011-110722.zip"}.
Facts/tasks/chats listing diffed identical to the one taken before the backup (60 facts, 20 tasks, 13 chats, original title back), after-backup.txt gone. A "before restoring a backup" snapshot (12 chats, 58 memories, 19 tasks, no files) is listed, and last_restore.sign_ins shows each sign-in with signed_in: true (same computer).
  4. Engine working afterwards, real chats using restored memories (memory search on ollama/nomic-embed-text, with the Ollama lock):
    • claude-code/sonnet: "what's my cat called, and when is my mum's birthday?" → "Biscuit, your ginger cat. And your mum's birthday is November 2nd." memory_sources led with facts 48 and 34 (the two that were deleted and restored). A second turn ("who is Kavya, and what's my eating-out budget?") had usage model: claude-code/sonnet → "Kavya is your developer colleague who builds the components you design. Your eating-out budget is ₹3,000/month."
    • ollama_chat/qwen3:8b (usage model: ollama_chat/qwen3:8b, 2650 prompt tokens): same question → "Your cat's name is Biscuit. Your mum's birthday is on 2 November." with facts 34 and 48 as its memory sources.
  5. Fresh install: sentient restore <that zip> --now into a new, empty SENTIENT_HOME → the app opened it with 60 facts and 13 chats.
  6. Migration snapshot (simulated schema bump on that test home: PRAGMA user_version = 0, as a database from an older build): on start the log said snapshot sentient-snapshot-20261011-111106.zip taken before updating the database (version 0 to 1), user_version became 1; its manifest has schema_version: 0 (copied before the update), contents without files. Starting again took no new snapshot.
  7. UI (built app via scripts/smoke.mjs settings/backups, 1440x1300 and 900x900, and the built renderer served by the engine in a browser):
    • Settings > Backups shows the green "Restored the backup from Oct 11, 2026, 11:06 AM" banner with Dismiss, Back up (with the keychain note), Back up now / To another folder, the backup folder with Open / Choose, the Restore list ("Oct 11, 2026, 11:11 AM · 13 chats · 60 memories · 20 tasks · 11 skills · 176 KB"), Snapshots ("Before updating the database (version 0 to 1)") and Automatic backups (Off/Daily/Weekly, keep counts). Narrow width wraps cleanly.
    • Clicking Restore opened "Restore this backup?" with "13 chats · 60 memories · 20 tasks · 11 skills", that current data is replaced and a snapshot is saved first, and a "Sign-ins are not in backups" box listing Anthropic, OpenRouter, Google Calendar, GitHub, Telegram. Confirming showed "A restore is waiting" with Cancel restore; Cancel cleared it. Back up now showed a "Backed up" toast with the new file's path.

Note: the seed scripts point Ollama at an unreachable address and use a fake embedding model, so before switching memory search to nomic-embed-text a first Sonnet turn found no memories. That is the screenshot seed's setup, not this change.

Re-run after the default-folder change (same engine, port 8789)

The test engine's Documents was a scratch folder (SENTIENT_DOCUMENTS_DIR) so nothing touched the real Documents.

  • GET /api/backups → folder = default_folder = <scratch>/documents/Sentient Backups, home separate. POST /api/backups wrote sentient-backup-20261011-123418.zip there (17 chats, 60 memories, 20 tasks).
  • Deleted memories 48 (Biscuit) and 34 (mum's birthday), task demo-weekly, chat "Budget and Japan trip savings", renamed "Morning check-in", added a file. Staged the restore, hard-stopped and started the engine: restore applied with snapshot sentient-snapshot-20261011-123445.zip; the listing diffed identical to before the backup and the extra file was gone.
  • claude-code/sonnet (usage model: claude-code/sonnet): "Your cat is Biscuit (a ginger cat). Mum's birthday is November 2." with restored facts 48 and 34 first in memory_sources. ollama_chat/qwen3:8b: "Your cat's name is Biscuit. Your mum's birthday is on 2 November." from facts 34 and 48.
  • Screenshots (built app, smoke): the Back up section shows the keychain and devices-certificate lines; Backup folder shows the Documents path with "In your Documents folder, apart from your data, so a backup survives losing it."; with a Documents folder that doesn't exist it shows <home>/backups and "Inside Sentient's data folder, because your Documents folder can't be used. Pick a folder elsewhere so a backup survives losing it."
  • Real ~/Documents/Sentient Backups and ~/.sentient/backups do not exist after all runs.

After merging main (incognito chats, #154)

  • Main added sessions.incognito, so SCHEMA_VERSION is now 2. Starting the merged engine on the test home (version 1, no column) logged snapshot sentient-snapshot-20261011-130203.zip taken before updating the database (version 1 to 2), then the column was added (60 facts, 20 tasks intact). That is a real schema update, not a simulated one.
  • Open incognito chats are removed from the backup's database copy with secure_delete on, so a backup never keeps one (test checks the raw database bytes).

Re-run with Windows' real Documents in OneDrive (fake Known Folder result)

  • On this PC the new ctypes call returns C:\Users\<user>\OneDrive\Documents, the same as [Environment]::GetFolderPath('MyDocuments') (read only, nothing written there).
  • The engine was started through a small launcher that replaces only sentient.paths._windows_documents with a scratch fake-profile/OneDrive/Documents (a stale fake-profile/Documents also existed). GET /api/backups gave folder = .../fake-profile/OneDrive/Documents/Sentient Backups, folder_cloud: "OneDrive", folder_in_home: false. POST /api/backups wrote sentient-backup-20261011-135007.zip there (19 chats, 60 memories, 20 tasks); the stale Documents stayed empty.
  • Deleted memories 48 and 34, task demo-daily and chat "Weekly review, week 40", renamed a chat; restored from the OneDrive copy, hard-stopped and restarted: error: null, snapshot sentient-snapshot-20261011-135034.zip, listing diffed identical.
  • claude-code/sonnet: "Your cat is Biscuit, and your mum's birthday is November 2." qwen3:8b: "My cat's name is Biscuit. Your mum's birthday is on 2 November." (a small-model phrasing slip, right facts). Both had restored facts 48 and 34 as memory sources.
  • Screenshot (built app, Documents under a OneDrive folder): the Backup folder row shows the amber line "This folder syncs to OneDrive, so your backups (chats, memory, the device certificate) are copied to the cloud too." above "In your Documents folder, apart from your data...", with Open and Choose....
  • The real ~/Documents/Sentient Backups, ~/OneDrive/Documents/Sentient Backups and ~/.sentient/backups do not exist after all runs.

Checks

  • pytest -q: 1418 passed, 2 skipped (after merging main again) (feat(chat): show sources under answers #290 added messages.sources, and feat(tasks): recurring tasks remember their last runs #292 added tasks.notepad, so SCHEMA_VERSION is 4) (full suite, with the real-folder guard on every test); tests/test_backup.py has 23 tests (a damaged staged restore changes nothing, a file that can't be read means no backup, Known Folder lookup and fallback, cloud-sync detection, a restore whose snapshot fails stays waiting, incognito chats left out, identical-state round trip incl. files and sign-ins, schema-bump snapshot and pruning, ensure_column safety net, Hermes snapshot, snapshot restore keeps files, hostile/damaged archives refused, scheduled backups, routes, lifespan applies a staged restore, rollback on a failed move, a rollback that fails keeps the data aside, a failed scheduled backup is retried and told once)
  • ruff check sentient tests packaging: clean
  • npm run typecheck && npm run build: clean

For the owner

  • Decided: default folder Documents/Sentient Backups with the data-folder fallback, and tls/ stays in backups with a privacy line in Settings.
  • On Windows a Documents folder redirected to OneDrive is now used (Known Folder API), and Settings says the backups sync to the cloud.

One-click backup of SENTIENT_HOME to a zip (SQLite online backup API for the
database, config, workspace, skills, files, devices certificate; never keychain
secrets). Restore is checked and staged, then applied at the next engine start
with a snapshot of the current data first and a rollback on failure. Snapshots
are taken before a schema update (PRAGMA user_version), before the first added
column, before a Hermes import and before a restore; the last N are kept.
Scheduled backups, REST routes, CLI commands and a Settings > Backups section.

I’m a rabbit with a backup tucked away,
A snapshot keeps the past from hopping astray.
I check the archive, then pause for the cue,
Restore brings the saved data through.
Five small snapshots sit safe in a row,
And I nibble a carrot while changes flow.

… folder

Falls back to <home>/backups when Documents is missing or can't be written to.
Tests always override the Documents folder, and a conftest guard fails any test
that writes to the real user's backup folders. The Settings section says a
backup holds the devices certificate, and Open shows the actual folder.

Windows resolves Documents with SHGetKnownFolderPath (FOLDERID_Documents) through
ctypes, so a folder redirected to OneDrive is used instead of a stale ~/Documents.
The overview names the sync service (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud)
the backup folder is inside, and Settings says the backups are copied to the
cloud too. The test guard also covers the real known Documents folder.

`manifest["skipped"]` to reject the backup when any files were skipped, raising
`BackupError` before writing the manifest or publishing the archive. Preserve
successful archive creation when no files were skipped.
