What and why

Adds an opt-in OpenAI-compatible API so local editors, scripts, and shortcuts can use Sentient's memory and tools. /v1/models and /v1/chat/completions support a separate Keychain-backed API key, persistent named chats, and streaming or JSON replies. Approval requests use the existing kind: "approval" notification flow; denied or expired calls are reported as not done, and Stop everything cancels waiting turns.

API text is outside content before planning starts. It cannot satisfy "Only if I asked," use the trusted quick-command shortcut, or become the owner's own words for memory review. API input is excluded from automatic standing-rule detection. Stored API messages retain their provenance through history replay and search, including after the source chat is trusted again. Concurrent first requests preserve one chat per name without overwriting other names. Overlapping API requests for the same chat return 409 chat_busy without queuing later work. Malformed non-ASCII bearer values return the normal 401 invalid_api_key response. Task completion releases admission on success, errors, and cancellation, including cancellation before the task starts.

Closes #211. Candidate commit: d4a657be3ced43c13823c4e6966eaa743db2e50c.

Setup scope: configuration and key-management endpoints are included. A dedicated desktop Settings setup card is proposed as a separate follow-up; please flag if it should be included here instead.

How I tested it

  • 57 focused API, trust, memory, named-session, and overlapping-request tests passed. Targeted red/green checks reproduced the authorization, memory, stale-trust-snapshot, and session-mapping, malformed-header, and overlapping-request failures before the fixes.
  • Full engine suite: 2,761 passed, 1 skipped, 1 voice-test failure. That voice test passes individually on both the original 3dfb69db and the patched tree. The entire Telegram test file also passed on the candidate (28 tests). The cause of that local full-suite failure remains unconfirmed; Linux and Windows CI on 90b6d95 passed without reruns.
  • uvx ruff@0.16.7 check sentient tests packaging and Python compilation passed.
  • Fresh CI for the candidate commit is pending. The prior 90b6d95 CI run passed with 2,860 tests passed and 2 skipped on each of Linux and Windows, without reruns. Desktop checks run in CI.

Real test

Ran the production app factory through Uvicorn in a separate empty test home, with its own OS-keychain namespace and loopback port. The real provider was ollama_chat/qwen3:8b and execute_code used the real process sandbox. The run used a 2,048-token context, background services disabled, approvals mode off, execute_code: if_asked, and model second-look disabled. Other tools were hidden through normal Never rules.

The Qwen approval run tested the code in 90b6d95. The later authentication and request-admission corrections are covered by the 57 focused regressions. The Qwen run was not repeated on the follow-up commit because available local memory had fallen again; this trace is not presented as a live run of the latest tip. Ordinary authenticated API requests asked the model to run a harmless script that printed a unique marker and wrote one test file. The harness checked that the proposed script matched the supplied code before answering its approval.

Public-safe excerpt from the completed trace:

Deny / non-streaming JSON
  pending approval: execute_code, risk=exec, source=api
  outside-content reason: another app (API)
before decision: no tool result or marker; request still waiting after 2 seconds
  recorded decision: deny, rule=if_asked
  tool_result.declined: true
  marker files: []
reply: "The action was not done."
appended API notice: Not done: "Execute code" needed your OK in Sentient and didn't get it.

Allow / streaming SSE
before decision: no tool result or marker; request still waiting after 2 seconds
recorded decision: allow, rule=if_asked, outside-content reason=another app (API)
tool result: {"ok": true, "backend": "process", "stdout": "PR479_ALLOW_bbff23d83d\n",
                "stderr": "", "duration_ms": 1788, "error": null}
exactly one marker file, with the expected contents
  final stream frame: [DONE]

Result: both cases passed; engine exited gracefully; test key, home, and lock removed.

This live run covers Deny with JSON and Allow with SSE. Timeout, cancellation, both response-mode permutations, and concurrency have offline regression coverage. Desktop UI, phone, and paired-chat delivery were not exercised live. The live run is post-fix evidence; before/after regression evidence comes from the automated tests.

A separate real-engine HTTP check on d4a657b passed with no model involved: both /v1/models and /v1/chat/completions returned 401 invalid_api_key with x-should-retry: false for a raw non-ASCII bearer header. No API session was created. Separate OS-keychain authentication, rejection of the desktop token, graceful shutdown, and removal of the test key/home were also verified.

Checklist

  • Fresh candidate CI is pending; prior CI and the local full-run caveat are documented above.
  • Tests added or updated; focused checks pass.
  • uvx ruff@0.16.7 check sentient tests packaging is clean.
  • docs/API.md updated for the contract.
  • User-visible changelog entry added in changes/211.added.md.
  • No keys, tokens, or personal data included in this description or test evidence.

…ible API

POST /v1/chat/completions (with and without streaming) and GET /v1/models, off
until openai_api.enabled is on, behind their own key in the keychain
(POST /api/openai-api/key with the window's token). Each request's `user` gets
its own named chat on the "api" channel, and only the last user message is sent.

Errors use OpenAI's shape and carry x-should-retry: false, so OpenAI's SDKs don't
retry a failed turn and run its tools again.

Approvals for API turns and a Settings card are still open (questions in existence-master#211).

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request adds an optional OpenAI-compatible chat API with key authentication, named sessions, and streaming responses. It marks API input as outside content and routes tool approval requests to paired channels.

Changes: OpenAI-Compatible Chat API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and serve the API
sentient/config/schema.py, desktop/src/lib/types.ts, sentient/gateway/routes/*, sentient/gateway/routes/openai_api.py, docs/API.md, desktop/src/features/channels/meta.tsx, sentient/activity/timeline.py, tests/test_openai_api.py, tests/test_openai_api_sessions.py, changes/211.added.md
Adds a default-off API configuration, authenticated key and model endpoints, named chat sessions, and streaming and non-streaming completions. Tests cover authentication, responses, approvals, and concurrent session creation. The UI and Activity identify API chats.
Mark API input as outside content
sentient/tools/rules.py, sentient/agent/loop.py, sentient/tools/builtin/memory_tool.py, tests/test_api_memory.py, tests/test_api_trust_snapshot.py
API messages are marked as outside content and excluded from the user's own words. The agent skips quick-command planning for API turns, and memory workflows retain API-origin information and apply approval checks to recalled API history.
Deliver approvals through paired channels
sentient/channels/service.py, docs/API.md, tests/channels/test_api_approvals.py
Live API-turn approvals are delivered to default channel targets and tracked for settlement. Tests cover Allow and Deny decisions; documentation describes approval delivery and settlement.

Possibly related issues

  • existence-master/Sentient issue 492 — The API reports denied or expired tool calls as not done; the issue requests similar outcomes for additional send and save actions.
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 90b6d

The API is mergeable with bounded follow-up, but malformed keys can produce retryable server errors, and parallel requests to one named chat can produce replies without the other turn’s exchange.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 90b6d

The API is disabled by default and separates app credentials from the authority to approve sensitive actions. However, credential holders can request work using the assistant’s memory and tools, and interrupted approval setup can leave inconsistent approval state. Actual network exposure and recovery during storage failures remain partly unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new API approval adapter does not own cleanup from approval creation onward. The execution loop creates a broker future before yielding an approval request, but the adapter records it only after notification creation succeeds. If notification persistence fails, the API turn terminates without entering the broker wait that supplies timeout cleanup, and its finalizer cannot identify the unrecorded approval. This leaves pending authorization state without a live turn. The inspected path fails closed; this is an approval-lifecycle and recovery defect, not an established execution bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A compromised API credential permits requests against the owning profile’s available memory and tool capabilities and selection of any named API chat. There is no per-application isolation in this contract. Existing tool rules and outside-content approval checks constrain execution; the credential alone does not confer control-endpoint or approval authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Key issuance requires the existing gateway control token. API admission requires enablement and a constant-time comparison against the separate Keychain secret. Inspected regression tests reject the control token as an API credential and reject an old API key after rotation.
  • observed — Approval resolution remains centralized. The broker rejects completed or unknown approvals and prevents responses from widening offered approval scope. Paired-channel button handling requires a paired chat and, for groups, its pairing owner. Inspected tests assert that API code does not run before approval or after denial, timeout, or Stop everything.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Approval presentation is a separate projection of broker state. The API estimates expiry from elapsed time, so a late explicit denial can be displayed as expired. This does not change the broker’s execution decision, but limits the notification’s accuracy as an authorization history. Notification-creation failure additionally exposes the cleanup-ownership concern above.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give approval creation a cleanup scope that begins before notification publication, and project explicit broker terminal reasons into notifications rather than inferring them from timing. Failure-injection checks could validate notification persistence failure and interruption between decision and tool-result delivery.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: an opt-in, OpenAI-compatible API that lets other apps chat with Sentient. The changeset adds the /v1/models and /v1/chat/completions routes, the openai_api config section, key creation, named API chats, and docs. The title is specific and matches the primary objective of PR #479 and linked issue #211.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #211 requires an optional localhost OpenAI-compatible API, separate key authentication, named sessions with Sentient replies, memory and tools, approvals in the app, refusal without the key, and streaming and authentication tests. The PR adds the /v1/models and /v1/chat/completions routes, a disabled-by-default openai_api configuration, Keychain-backed key creation and bearer authentication, named sessions, memory and tool integration, approval notifications, streaming and JSON responses, and focused tests for authentication and streaming. The reported CI results also support the implementation and test coverage.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #211. Configuration, documentation, API source labeling, approval delivery, trust handling, memory handling, session concurrency, and their tests support the API contract and its safety requirements. The PR explicitly defers the desktop Settings setup card, so no unrelated Settings implementation is included.

A rabbit taps the API door,
A named chat hops across the floor.
If tools need leave, approvals wait,
Then paired chats deliver their fate.
Outside words stay marked with care,
And streaming answers fill the air.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

A call an API turn needs the user's OK for posts a kind "approval" notification
with the turn's approval_request: the window's existing Allow and Deny card
answers it, and paired chats get it like a task's approval (held while the user
is in the app), through the channel's own approval buttons. Its status follows
the answer (allow, deny, expired), so every place that shows it settles.

The request waits for the answer. A call that was declined or not answered in
time is never claimed: the reply ends with a line saying it was not done.

Each API turn runs in its own task: Stop everything ends it with "Stopped."
(and any approval it waited on), and a client that hangs up no longer cuts it
short. Chats and Activity say "From another app (API)".

@itsskofficial pushed 3dfb69d with option A, following your four points:

  1. Approvals ask in the app. A call an API turn needs the user's OK for posts a kind: "approval" notification (the window's Allow and Deny card), and paired chats get it like a task's approval: held while the user is in the app, sent when they leave, through the channel's own approval buttons.
  2. The client waits and is told the truth. The request waits for the answer; a declined or unanswered call ends the reply with Not done: "<tool>" needed your OK in Sentient and didn't get it., so it's never claimed.
  3. Where it shows. Chats and Activity say "From another app (API)".
  4. Stop everything ends a waiting API turn (409 stopped), and its approval becomes expired.

One thing to check with you: I couldn't find an engine path that already sends kind: "approval" notifications. Task approvals go out as kind: "task" questions answered through the task. So I reused the window's existing ApprovalActions card for that kind and each channel's send_approval() with ap: buttons, and taught ChannelService to hold and send these the same way as task approvals. If you had a different path in mind, I'll move it there.

The Settings card question is still open in the description, so I've kept this a draft for now.

@Tanmay-Ts, a heads-up from testing a similar PR (#487, sentient mcp). Please check this on yours before you mark it ready. When another app drives a chat turn, its text must not count as the user's own words. On #487, the client's text went into ctx.user_words (agent/loop.py ~1762), so an "Only if I asked" rule on code let the client run code on the host with no question in the app.

For /v1 turns, please:

  • mark the session as outside content from the start (like email tasks, ADR 0033);
  • keep the request text out of user_words;
  • check with a real run that an "Only if I asked" rule on execute_code still asks in the app when a /v1 client asks for code.

Your approvals-as-notifications approach is exactly right for the asking part.

Keep API input outside personal authorization through planning, stored history, and memory review. Serialize named-session creation so concurrent clients retain their conversations.

Refs existence-master#211.
