the forum is gone, discord is gone, i barely find information online...
i installed and set up this several years ago and i don't wanna migrate to batocera or whatever, but it's hard when it feels like im the only one that even knows about attract-mode lately

I jumped ship to Batocera a couple years back and don't regret it. Much better documented and maintained. Its a complete OS though not just a frontend. Its Linux based so be mindful you will be fiddling about over SSH snd ftp a bit if you're main editing OS is Windows. Its also not open source to my knowledge so you won't be editing too deeply outside of custom Emulation Station (also well documented) themes which is more powerful than Attract Mode I might add. Batocera is completely portable between computers. Load it on a USB drive plug it into any x86 based PC and boot off the USB. Also the Emulation Themes can be migrated easily between ARM sbc builds and x86 desktop pc builds.

Batocera is great, but booting another system just to play... it's not for me. A-M is perfect for my usecase.
So I'm still interested in answers to OP's question: How's the future of Attract-Mode looking? Is it really time to look for alternatives?

That's great! OP's post scared me a bit so I jumped to look for an alternative, but I'm fine with Attract as it is now.
