Problem

  • bun build --compile --aot --explain reports Calls: 8 direct, 1 indirect for a callback passed as the ninth argument of a nine-parameter function. Passed eighth, or first of nine, the call is direct. No line under Compiler limits hit names a limit.
  • Whole-program analysis keeps nodes for the first eight argument positions of a call group (numberOfGroupedArguments = 8, valueflow/AOTValueFlow.h). Every later argument flows into one node, laterArguments, and passArguments (valueflow/AOTValueFlowRulesCalls.cpp) adds undefined to every parameter behind the eighth. In the reporter's case the ninth parameter holds undefined|f, the entry check is skipped as answered, and the call keeps a TypeTest with an indirect arm.

Fix

  • A call group keeps as many argument positions as the most positional parameters among its callees, from 8 up to the new limit MaxGroupedArguments (32). The count is part of the group's key (ValueFlowNodeKey::callGroup, 5 bits of detail), so the parts of a large group have the layout of the whole and every creator of a group agrees on it.
  • A group that a built-in, an unknown value or an entry-described closure may be called through keeps 8: the tables read arguments by position up to that count. A description of a call that lists 8 arguments hands its later arguments to every further position of a wider group (passOperandsOf). The cells of a rest array keep the first 8 positions whatever group wrote them.
  • The report names the function under MaxGroupedArguments where the limit cut, and under MaxGroupedArgumentsOfOtherCalls where a group keeps 8 for another reason or a rest array hands arguments on.
  • Verified: 12 new tests in tests/valueflow/calls (7 fail on main, 5 guard the paths a wider group now reaches), all of testaot (5873 passed). The reporter's program: Calls: 9 direct, 0 indirect. Self-reviewed: 15 concerns raised, 14 addressed (Notes).

Background

  • The value flow analysis builds a graph of nodes that hold sets of values. A call group is one block of nodes per set of callees: this, new.target, the result, the thrown value, otherArguments (positions nobody knows), laterArguments, and one node per argument position. Every call site with the same callees shares the block, and runCallGroup connects it to the parameters of each callee.
  • A limit of the build is a LimitID in ir/schema/limits.def. The build counts each hit with its subject, and Bun prints them at the end of --explain.
  • Considered raising the constant to 16 or 32: every call group of every program would pay 8 to 24 more nodes, and the cliff would move. With the count per group, a program whose functions take at most 8 parameters gets the same nodes as before.

Downsides

  • A group of callees with more than 8 parameters takes N-8 more nodes and edges. On a node:http program, the limit forced to 8 against 32 on the same engine: 4 library functions hit it at 8, none at 32, FlowEdgesLogged 266638 against 266786 (+0.06%), codeBytes identical (3511256).
  • numberOfArgumentsGroupedFor walks the callee set once per group() call, for sets of up to 64 members. numberOfPositionsTakenBy did a walk of up to 4 members before.
  • A function with more than 32 positional parameters still has the cliff, now reported. A function reached beside a built-in, or through a spread rest array, keeps the cliff at 8, reported under MaxGroupedArgumentsOfOtherCalls.
Notes

Why only exactly nine parameters went indirect on main

With ten or more parameters, the later arguments of the reporter's walk include numbers beside the callback. Flow then gives the callback parameter undefined|number|f, the entry check for its declared type stays, and the code behind the check knows the callee. With exactly nine, flow gives undefined|f, which lies within the declared type, so SkipAnsweredEntryChecks drops the check and ResolveCalls emits a TypeTest for f with an Unreachable-bound indirect Call in the undefined arm: that is the one indirect call. The reporter's larger program (11 to 16 parameters) lost precision the same way: a parameter behind the eighth received every later argument, so entry checks stayed and this was unproven in methods of the classes passed there.

Self-review

15 concerns, 14 addressed:

  • A description from withDescriptionOf (8 arguments + laterArguments) fed into a wider group dropped positions 8..N-1: walk.bind(x).call(null, 0 x8, cb) made cb unreached and the build emitted a trap. Fixed in passOperandsOf, test ninth-argument-through-a-bound-function-reaches-the-ninth-parameter.ir.
  • Rest cells written by a wide group and spread into a narrow one lost the arguments in cells 8..N-1. The cells now go by the 8 positions every group keeps, test tenth-argument-forwarded-through-a-rest-array-reaches-a-narrower-group.ir.
  • A hit was reported under MaxGroupedArguments where the limit had not cut (a built-in beside the function). Split into two limits.
  • A rest forwarder (wrap(...args) { walk(...args) }) kept the cliff at 8 without a report. Now reported under MaxGroupedArgumentsOfOtherCalls, test ninth-argument-through-a-rest-forwarder-reaches-every-later-parameter.ir.
  • No test covered mixed arities in one group, a group with parts, a callback of 9 or 33 parameters handed to a built-in, a call with fewer arguments than the group keeps. Added.
  • Not taken: keying part blocks by the whole's count duplicates a part shared by two wholes of different counts. The duplicate is sound (both run passArguments) and rare.

Measurement

bun build --compile --aot test/aot/parallel/node-http/accessors-added-between-socket-and-owner.ts --aot-report=<f> with --aot-limit=MaxGroupedArguments:8 and :32 on the same release build of this branch (on 4d45755). At 8: MaxGroupedArguments hit 4 times. At 32: 0 hits, FlowProvenPositions 4514 -> 4516, FlowRemainingChecks 8067 -> 8065, UnusedParametersRemoved 111 -> 113, UnreachableFunctionsRemoved 360 -> 361, BytesGeneratedInHotAndWarmBands 2731134 -> 2730601.

A survey of 1306 packages under test/node_modules found 179 functions with more than 8 positional parameters, 11 over 16, none over 32.

Bun side

oven-sh/bun gets the program test/aot/parallel/calls/a-callback-passed-as-the-ninth-argument-is-called-directly.ts (STATISTIC: IndirectCalls = 0, under // Todo: until the engine is bumped) and a paragraph in docs/compiler/explain.mdx.

…ost parameters among its callees

Whole-program analysis kept nodes for the first eight argument positions
of a call group. Every later argument flowed into one node, and a
parameter behind the eighth received every later argument and undefined.
A callback passed as the ninth argument became an indirect call, and no
limit named the cut.

A group whose callees are all functions of the program now keeps as many
positions as the most positional parameters among them, from eight up to
MaxGroupedArguments (32). The count is part of the group's key, so parts
of a group have the layout of the whole. A group that a built-in, an
unknown object or an entry-described closure may be called through keeps
eight, as the tables read arguments by position up to that count. A
description of a call that lists eight arguments hands its later
arguments to every further position of a wider group. The cells of a
rest array keep the first eight positions, whatever group wrote them.

Two limits name the cut in the report: MaxGroupedArguments where the
limit cut a group down, and MaxGroupedArgumentsOfOtherCalls where a group
keeps eight for the sake of a callee that is no function of the program,
or a rest array hands arguments on.

Walkthrough

Call groups now retain a variable number of positional arguments. Value-flow rules, solver layouts, result handling, and limit reporting use that count. New tests cover direct calls, built-ins, bound functions, larger callee sets, and rest-argument forwarding.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a call group keeps one node per argument position up to the largest parameter count among its callees. The changeset adds per-group argument counts bounded by MaxGroupedArguments (32), which matches this title. The title is specific, uses the same terms as the code, and is slightly long at 101 characters.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the WebKit commit-message template in substance. It has a bug link (oven-sh/bun#47764, related but not a WebKit Bugzilla bug), a Problem section, a Fix section, and a Background section. It explains the change and gives verification results. It lacks the template's 'Reviewed by' line, the Bugzilla bug title and URL, and the changed-files list with function names. The template also asks for a Bugzilla link and a changed-files list, so these are missing.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Select the report limit from the cause of the precision cut.

If MaxGroupedArguments is set to eight, a group containing a built-in and a program function with nine parameters retains eight positions. This comparison reports MaxGroupedArguments, not MaxGroupedArgumentsOfOtherCalls. Increasing MaxGroupedArguments would not improve that mixed group. Record whether group sizing used the other-calls rule, then select the matching report limit. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether a group wider than 8 can reach withDescriptionOf in AOTValueFlowBuiltins.cpp (which only reads the first eight positions): numberOfArgumentsGroupedFor keeps 8 for any callee set that is a complement, exceeds mostMembersToldApart, or contains a non-function or entry-described closure, and part keys inherit the whole's count, so the built-in/other-callable paths only ever see 8-argument groups. I also checked that ValueFlowNodeKey::hash and operator== cover the detail byte, so groups of the same callees with different counts cannot alias.

Extended reasoning...

The change makes the per-group argument-node count variable (8 to 32) across the AOT value-flow analysis, packing the count into the call-group node key and updating every callGroupAt caller, the solver's part/wish plumbing, the call rules, and two new build limits; it touches no auth, crypto or injection surface. One confirmed finding was posted inline (rest-array cell handling for functions with more than 8 positional parameters plus a rest parameter), and the change is large and intricate enough that a human familiar with the value-flow solver should weigh it, so this is a defer rather than an approval.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing imprecision the new wider group was meant to remove: a function with more than 8 positional parameters plus a rest parameter still hands its 9th.. positional arguments into its rest array's later cell. The loop at AOTValueFlowRulesCalls.cpp:1067 starts at numberOfKnownPositions (8) even when positional is larger, so group.argument(8..positional-1) are connected to laterRestArguments although those positions are named parameters, not rest elements. Fix: start that loop at std::max(positional, numberOfKnownPositions) so only positions that actually land in the rest array feed laterRestArguments; the sibling loops at lines 1046 and 1053 already start at positional.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: a program function such as function f(a,b,c,d,e,g,h,i,j,k, ...rest) { g(...rest) } whose callers are all program functions, so numberOfArgumentsGroupedFor (AOTValueFlowRuleContext.cpp) gives its group 10 argument nodes. In passArguments, positional = 10 and numberOfKnownPositions = 8 (AOTValueFlowRulesCalls.cpp:1051). The loop at AOTValueFlowRulesCalls.cpp:1067 runs for index 8 and 9 and connects group.argument(8) and group.argument(9), the nodes of parameters j and k, into context.written(rest, laterRestArguments). passRestArrayByPosition then reads laterRestArguments into every position of g's group, so the values passed for j and k reach every parameter of g. The base branch had the same over-approximation because positions 8 and 9 were lumped into laterArguments, which also flowed to laterRestArguments; the change gives those positions their own nodes but this loop merges them back, so the precision the PR adds for functions of more than 8 parameters does not reach the rest-forwarding path. No test covers positional > 8 with a rest parameter.

Verification: Trigger: a program function with more than 8 positional parameters and a rest parameter spread alone into one call. Lines 1067-1068 of AOTValueFlowRulesCalls.cpp start at 8 regardless of positional, so group.argument(8) and group.argument(9) reach laterRestArguments, which passRestArrayByPosition reads into every argument of the forwarded call. Not a regression: on the base, line 1069 put the same values in that cell.
