--calc aimnet2: fall back to aimnet2calc only when aimnet is not installed - #19
Conversation
…alled The import fallback caught every ImportError from aimnet. An installed aimnet that failed to import (a missing or incompatible dependency) was then reported as a missing aimnet2calc, or silently replaced by an old aimnet2calc install. Fall back only when the missing module is aimnet itself; otherwise report aimnet's own import error as an input error. Raised in the review of #18. - Line 201: Update the fallback condition around _AIMNET_MODULES so fallback
occurs only when ModuleNotFoundError.name is exactly "aimnet"; missing aimnet
submodules must propagate as KinisotInputError. Update the existing
submodule-missing test to expect KinisotInputError.

The fallback to aimnet2calc also fired when aimnet was installed but aimnet.calculators or aimnet.calculators.aimnet2ase could not be found, contrary to "only when aimnet is not installed". It now requires the missing module to be aimnet itself; an installed aimnet without its calculator module is reported like any other broken aimnet. The test of the fallback now simulates an absent aimnet as Python reports it, and the missing-submodule case joins the broken-aimnet tests. Summary
Follow-up to the CodeRabbit finding on #18.
aimnet2_calculator()fell back to the olderaimnet2calcpackage on anyImportErrorfromaimnet. As a result, an installedaimnetthat failed to import was either:aimnet2calc("install aimnet"), hiding the real error; oraimnet2calcwas also installed. The import could fail because of a missing submodule or a missing or incompatible dependency.
The fallback now happens only when Python reports the top-level
aimnetpackage itself as missing (ModuleNotFoundErrorwithname == "aimnet"). Any other import failure is reported as aKinisotInputErrorthat names aimnet's own error. That includes a missingaimnet.calculatorsoraimnet.calculators.aimnet2asein an installedaimnet. For example:Changes
kinisot/backends/ase.py: narrows the fallback condition inaimnet2_calculator().tests/test_ase.py:aimnet.calculators.aimnet2asefail, withaimnet2calcavailable. It covers three cases: a missing dependency (ModuleNotFoundError), an incompatible dependency (ImportError), and a missing calculator submodule. All fail on the base code.aimnetthe way Python reports it (name='aimnet'), through an import hook. ANoneentry insys.moduleswould instead report the submodule as missing.CHANGELOG.md: one sentence added to the existing unreleased AIMNet2 entry. The second commit (b909248) narrows the first commit's condition, which still accepted a missing submodule of an installed
aimnet. That came from CodeRabbit's review of this PR.Verification
