Spring Tools

The all-new Spring Tools for Visual Studio Code, Eclipse, and Theia. Learn more at https://spring.io/tools.

Getting started

Installation

Depending on your development environment, you can choose between:

  • Visual Studio Code: We provide extensions for Visual Studio Code if you prefer this lightweight editor for your development.
  • Cursor: We provide extensions for Cursor if you prefer this lightweight editor for agentic development.
  • AI coding agents: The Spring Tools Language Server agent plugin provides Spring-aware MCP tools and skills for Claude Code, GitHub Copilot CLI and Codex; OpenCode can connect to the same server over MCP.
  • Spring Tools for Eclipse distribution: a ready-to-use distribution of the latest Eclipse Desktop IDE, prepackaged with Spring Tools and a few additional third-party extensions. Download, unpack, and start.
  • Spring Tools for Eclipse extensions: you can install the Spring Tools for Eclipse into an existing Eclipse Desktop IDE installation and use it from there.
  • Eclipse Theia: You can install the same extensions into Theia-based environments like gitpod.

For all those choices, you can find detailed installation instructions from the user guide: https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-tools/wiki/Installation

Running Claude Code in Docker

To run Claude Code against this repository in an isolated container (works for regular checkouts and git worktrees), you need Docker with Compose. From the repository root:

./docker-claude.sh

The first start builds the image. Run /login once inside the container (the login is shared by all checkouts and worktrees), or set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY on the host beforehand. Set GH_TOKEN to use gh inside the container. Your host ~/.m2/repository is available read-only; Maven writes stay in the container.

The image is not updated automatically. To pick up security updates (JDK, OS packages, Node.js, Claude Code), rebuild it regularly with ./docker-claude.sh --rebuild (once per checkout or worktree you use). Details are in docker/README.md.
