Barcodes and QR Codes: a Barcode panel and the vectorcraft-barcode crate - #2749
RICHRAN2030 wants to merge 48 commits into
Conversation
These predate the barcode work: `cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings`, which `cargo xtask ci` runs, fails on all three. Rewritten as clippy suggests, with no change in behaviour. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A new `vectorcraft-barcode` crate encodes EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, GS1-128, Code 128 (A, B and C), Code 39, Code 93, ITF-14 and ITF-25 and QR Codes from the public symbology standards, at the sizes those standards give: GS1 §5.2's 0.33 mm module and 37.29 × 25.93 mm EAN-13 with its guard bars 5X below the others, its 4.8 mm ITF-14 bearer bars, and ISO/IEC 18004's 4-module QR quiet zone. Check digits are worked out when a caller leaves them off and refused when a caller gets them wrong. A barcode is a group carrying its spec, like a graph, so the Barcode panel and `barcode.create` / `barcode.set` redraw it after an edit. The human readable line is set in OCR-B when the machine has it, which is what GS1 §5.2.4 recommends for it. Illustrator has no barcode tool (this needs a third-party plug-in there), so nothing here moves a parity score; ROADMAP.md, target-app-parity.md and ui-parity.md say so. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… standard-sized white boxes The picker names the standard each symbology belongs to beside its name and under it, and starts every type on an example value it can carry. A Check button asks the encoder about a value without drawing anything, so a wrong check digit is refused before a print run. The digits are set in the machine's OCR-B — found under whichever of its many names it was installed as, preferring a ten-pitch face — and turned into outlines by default, so the art carries no font. Every symbol sits on a white box of the size its standard gives it. barcode.createBatch draws one code a line as a grid from the artboard's top-left corner, ten to a row, reporting the lines the symbology cannot carry. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A batch leaves the codes it drew selected, so hiding the section whenever a barcode was selected made it vanish under the pointer after the first run. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…een and red verdicts The batch section is folded to start with and remembers where it was left: most visits draw one code, and the section is half the panel. Changing the type puts that type's example value in the field, so the panel never sits on a number the new symbology cannot carry. A Check that passes prints in green and one that fails in red, from a new theme token (success) rather than a hard-coded colour. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The panel rebuilt its settings from the selected object every frame, so a type picked in the menu survived exactly one frame: the dropdown looked dead and the art kept the type it was made with. Everything but the value itself is now drawn at once, one edit for the undo stack; a value being typed still waits for Update or the field's Enter, so a half-typed number never redraws the object. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…er Create Three sections — Content, Size, Appearance — with the numbers in a two-column grid so they line up and the labels can be scanned. Create is there whatever is selected: picking another type and drawing another code is what the panel is mostly for, and it was reachable only with nothing selected, so changing the type after drawing one edited that barcode instead of making a new one. New now deselects. The standard is cited by its identifiers only, so the line reads the same in every language; the values a type takes are translated. The batch reads one code a line, or a comma-separated row, and says so in the reader's language. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

The merge brought main's version bump; the lock file still named 0.11.0 for the new crate, which a --locked build refuses. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The merge of main kept both sides of the module list and folded the shared `#[cfg(test)]` onto tests_barcode alone, so the Blend panel's tests were built into the library — where the workspace's no-panic lints refuse their unwraps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… panel's strings The module size note read 'the module size multiplier, 1 = the standard one', whose comma split off an entry no parameter name starts: every_description_parses refused it, and a description that does not parse is one check_params skips, so the guard that the panel's keys are the command's had been passing on nothing. Fixed the note and the guard: the batch keys go to the batch command alone. main also added Dutch, Danish and Indonesian between this branch and the merge, and a complete catalog has to carry every label: the panel's 40 strings are in all three. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
main's release bump moved the workspace to 0.13.0; the lock still named the barcode crate 0.12.0, which the Windows 7 script refuses: it applies the windows-link patch and throws when anything but that entry moves, and a stale version moves on the first resolve. - Around line 112-124: Update the GS1 handling in the code128 data preparation
and encoding flow to preserve element boundaries: parse the bracketed elements
and insert an FNC1 separator after each variable-length element followed by
another element. Ensure the `values` handling for each code set maps the
separator sentinel to FNC1, and make Set C end digit runs at that sentinel.
- Around line 163-170: Update the automatic encoding loop at the worth_switching
branch to encode one digit in the current set before switching when the digit
run is odd, then always emit the Code C switch value when entering C from A or
B. Add a regression assertion verifying that encoding “12345” starts in Code B
and preserves the digits.
Review comments at @crates/barcode/src/code93.rs:
- Around line 105-107: Update the C check-character insertion before the K
checksum in the encoding function so the appended character preserves C’s actual
value, including shift values 43–46; keep the existing character mapping for
values 0–42.
Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/barcode.rs:
- Line 457: Convert the `gapX` and `gapY` values from millimetres to points
before they are added to the point-based layout dimensions in the batch layout
flow. Update the spacing assertion in `a_batch_lays_the_codes_out_in_rows` to
verify the converted default gap rather than a smaller point-based threshold.
- Around line 251-253: Preserve the barcode’s original symbol origin across
edits in `barcode.set`; `top_left` measures the drawn bounds, which can be
offset from that origin when the background is disabled, and rebuilding also
loses group transforms. Store and reuse the origin explicitly with the barcode
group, rather than inferring it from bounds, so edits preserve placement,
rotation, and scale.
Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/panels/barcode.rs:
- Around line 425-430: Update `batch_entries` to accept the selected symbology
and split single-line input on commas only for symbologies whose character set
excludes commas; preserve newline splitting for multiline input. Pass
`spec.symbology` at both `batch_rows` call sites that invoke `batch_entries`.
- Around line 132-143: Update the selected-barcode handling in the
`target`/`applies_at_once` block so committed `data` edits are applied with
`barcode.set` or retained until Update, rather than being discarded when
`applies_at_once` returns false. Preserve the existing immediate-application
behavior for other eligible changes.

…rigin, gaps, commits - GS1-128 puts FNC1 after a variable-length element string and before the next one, so a scanner sees where the lot number ends; fixed-length identifiers are delimited by their own length. - An odd run of digits carries its first digit in the current set before the switch to C, which otherwise produced a Start B followed by pair values. - Code 93's K check character sees the shift characters' own values (43-46); char_at fell back to '0' for them. - Redrawing a barcode without its white box keeps its place: the bounds start a quiet zone inside the symbol, and measuring from them moved it on every edit. - The batch gaps are millimetres in the description and points in the layout, which they now are before they are added. - Every committed change applies to the selected barcode at once, including a value the field committed; the fields commit on Enter or focus loss, never per keystroke. - The batch splits a single line on commas only for symbologies whose data cannot contain one. barcode.set rejecting a value left the field rebuilding from the stored one on the next frame, so what was typed vanished while the pointer was still in the box. A fixed-length identifier is delimited by its own length, so a letter in it leaves a scanner reading the field as digits it does not have: refused now. 410 to 417 are 13-digit GLNs, matched by their three digits — the 41 prefix is no identifier of its own — and the non-standard identifiers the table listed alongside them are gone. Two things the merge left behind, both of which stopped the gate's `--locked` jobs and the i18n completeness tests: - `Cargo.lock` still had `vectorcraft-barcode` at 0.13.1 while the workspace moved to 0.14.0. The package only exists on this branch, so the version bump could not reach its entry in the merge; `cargo clippy --locked` refused to run. - `ka.tsv` arrived on main without the barcode panel's strings, so the Georgian catalog failed `every_tl_literal_is_translated`, `complete_languages_translate_every_menu_string`, `menu_catalogs_translate_every_menu_label` and `every_undo_label_is_translated`. 38 rows added. …ed feature `lam_alef_is_not_an_alternate` asserted that no Arabic glyph comes out as an alternate, on whichever font the machine installs. Arial, which is the first face the helper finds on Windows, joins lam and alef with a standard ligature (`liga`) rather than the required one (`rlig`), and Highlight Alternate Glyphs does mark those, so the test failed on a machine with Arial and nothing else to pick. The test now checks its premise per string: laid out again with the optional features off, the letters must come out as the same glyphs. A face whose ligature is optional says so and stops, the way the helper already stops without an Arabic font. Behavior is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The barcode commands' six messages predate it, so they had none: added to cs, de, el, es, fi, fr, hu, it, ja, ka, ko, pl, pt-br, ru, sv, uk, vi, zh-hans and zh-hant. Thanks @RICHRAN2030. I'm holding this one for the project owner rather than landing it in the parity batches: the reference app has no barcode or QR code panel, so a new panel and a new crate are a product decision that goes beyond the parity work we're merging now. |
`vertical_ruby_is_upright_to_the_right_of_the_column` asserted that each ruby glyph is at most one point wider than tall. That holds for the CJK faces on Windows and macOS, but not for FreeBSD's fallback, whose kana are nearly square (8.24 × 7.22 pt at the reading's 10 pt size), so the FreeBSD job failed on main's new ruby test. The slack is now a fifth of the reading's size, which still catches a glyph lying on its side without assuming the face's proportions. Thanks @bflatastic — that reading is right, and I should have said it in the description: this is deliberately beyond parity, not a gap being closed. The reference app has no barcode or QR Code tool (packaging work needs a plug-in there), so nothing in here moves a parity score, and the PR does not touch an existing command or menu — it adds one panel, one crate and four commands ( Understood that it is the owner's call. Any of these shapes works on our side, so please pick whichever fits the product direction:

Merged Gate on GitHub now reports the PR as mergeable. The PR is still yours to route, @bflatastic — the note above in the thread lists the three shapes it could land in. 🤖 Addressed by Claude Code |

Small correction to what I said about SonarCloud: it is not that So there is nothing in this branch to change for it; I am leaving it alone rather than pushing commits that cannot affect it. 🤖 Addressed by Claude Code |

`main` appends new strings to the end of every catalog, and the barcode panel's 44 rows were parked there too, so `ka.tsv` conflicted on each merge into this branch. They now sit right after the file's header, where appends cannot reach them; the lookup does not depend on order. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/effect_gallery.rs:45`, from `main`'s new Effect Gallery, is another `clippy::nonminimal_bool` site under rustc 1.95: `!x.is_some_and(…)` becomes `x.is_none_or(…)`, same result. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
# Conflicts: # ROADMAP.md
# Conflicts: # docs/target-app-parity.md
The host-side merge committed conflict markers into docs/target-app-parity.md and ROADMAP.md. Keep main's newer dimension numbers and missing-subsystem notes and our Barcodes row; keep both progress-log lines, newest first. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Tur (tr) keeps every menu, tl! and undo label in its catalog, so the barcode panel's 38 labels and the barcode commands' six messages left five i18n tests failing. Their Turkish rows are in. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The merge resolved the lock file with the barcode crate still at 0.14.0 while main had moved the workspace to 0.16.0, so every --locked build refused to start. Regenerated with cargo metadata; the crate inherits version.workspace. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

What and why
Adds barcode and QR Code generation for packaging: a new
vectorcraft-barcodecrate, a Barcode panel under Window, and four commands —barcode.create,barcode.set,barcode.checkandbarcode.createBatch. Illustrator has no barcode tool of its own, so this is a feature beyond parity rather than a gap being closed.Symbologies: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, GS1-128, Code 128 (A, B and C), Code 39, Code 93, ITF-14, ITF-25 and QR Code (versions 1–40, four error correction levels).
Sizes come from the standards themselves (GS1 General Specifications §5.2–§5.4.7, ISO/IEC 15420, 15417, 16388, 16390, 18004): 0.33 mm modules and a 37.29 × 25.93 mm EAN-13, 4.8 mm bearer bars on an ITF-14, four-module quiet zones on a QR Code. Every symbol is drawn on a white box of exactly that size, so the quiet zones stay clear over a photograph or a coloured carton.
The human readable line is set in OCR-B — the face GS1 §5.2.4 names for it, found under whichever of its many installed names the machine has (
OCR-B,OCR-B 10 Pitch BT,OCRBStd, …), preferring a ten-pitch face — and turned into outlines by default, so the art carries no font and prints the same on a machine that has neither the face nor the document.barcode.checkasks the encoder about a value without drawing anything, so a wrong check digit is refused before a print run rather than on the carton.barcode.createBatchdraws one code a line as a grid from the artboard's top-left corner, ten to a row, and reports the lines the symbology cannot carry instead of drawing them. A barcode is a group carrying its spec, so it stays editable: changing any option redraws it in place. The panel names the standard each symbology belongs to beside its name, starts every type on an example value it can carry, and answers Check in green or red.
Running the gate turned up four problems outside the feature, each fixed here and each called out on the PR so they can be split out if you prefer:
nonminimal_boolclippy errors in existing code (crates/trace/tests/shared_boundaries.rs,crates/render/src/fx.rs,crates/engine/src/cmd/object.rs,crates/engine/src/cmd/patterncmds.rs), each a rewrite that keeps the condition's meaning;Cargo.lockleftvectorcraft-barcodeat 0.13.1 when the workspace moved to 0.14.0 — the package exists only on this branch, so the merge's version bump could not reach its entry, andcargo clippy --lockedrefused to run;ka.tsv, which arrived onmainafter this branch started, was missing the barcode panel's 38 strings;complete_languages_translate_every_message, added onmainafter this branch started, needs an@msgrow for every engine message in the 19 languages that translate messages; the barcode commands' six messages had none, so they are added there now;crates/engine/src/cmd/plugin.rs:126, frommain's newest commits, is a fifthnonminimal_boolsite (!x.is_some_and(…)written asx.is_none_or(…));render::tests_alternate::lam_alef_is_not_an_alternateassumed every Arabic face makes the lam-alef ligature with the required featurerlig; Arial, which is the face the helper finds first on Windows, makes it with the optionalliga, so the test now checks that premise per string and says so when it does not hold. How it was tested
cargo test -p vectorcraft-barcode— 42 tests, including a bit-exact comparison of every linear symbology's module row against bwip-js and of the QR matrices against segno, plus a check that every symbology's example value encodes. All 311 QR symbols and every linear symbol were also read back with zxing-cpp.cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib barcode— 15 tests: the size each standard gives, the white box, the digits as outlines by default, check without drawing, one-undo-step batch grids with no two symbols overlapping, and a guard that the params a caller sends match the ones each command documents.cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib barcode— 9 headless panel frames, including driving the type menu and asserting the selected barcode takes the new type.cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n— 51 tests with the new strings in all 19 catalogs.cargo fmt --all -- --check,cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-ui-egui -p vectorcraft-engine -p vectorcraft-barcode -p vectorcraft-text,cargo xtask layers.Driven end to end through the control channel and screenshotted: a batch of 23 codes laid out 10 + 10 + 3 from the artboard's top-left corner.
