Description

circles and floaty are fixed-width float layouts: 800px and 920px. On a 375px phone every page scrolls sideways by 426px (circles) and 545px (floaty). Even at 768px they overflow by 33px and 152px. This PR makes both fit, keeps each theme's look, and leaves desktop as it was apart from the fixes listed below. It is based on main and is independent of #6147, #6148 and #6149.

circles

  • Grid instead of floats. The 800px float shell (#topleft, #nav_buttons, #navbar, #chicago_main) is now a CSS grid with the same 200/600 split, capped at 800px. Grid rows stretch, so the sidebar and page backgrounds stay level without match_heights.js. That script is removed; nothing else referenced it.
  • Scalable buttons. Each of the four SVG buttons gets viewBox="0 0 140 180" and scales with its column. A 40:140 flex ratio keeps the spacer and buttons at exactly 40px and 140px when the page is 800px wide. Below 800px, button widths are fractional, so each SVG overhangs its button by 1px to stop the button's colour showing at the edges.
  • Welcome bar. It is centred with flexbox instead of a <table width="600px">.
  • Phones (<768px). One column: logo, the four buttons in a row, then the sidebar collapsed under a "Recent news & log in" bar ("& account" when logged in). Tapping the bar opens the sidebar in place, with aria-expanded kept in sync. The page content follows.
    • The sidebar only collapses once the small inline script has run, so without JavaScript it stays open and the login form stays reachable.
  • Fixed-width boxes. Below 800px, .emailwarning, .note/.info/.warning/.error and .helpbox drop their fixed widths.
  • Login box fixes (all widths). Both are visible in the "Login box" screenshot below.
    • The "User name:"/"Password:" labels were hard-coded #FFFFFF. That suited the original dark sidebar, but on the default #eee sidebar they were almost invisible. They now use color-contrast($sidebarBackground).
    • The submit button was an empty <button>, shown as a blank pill. It now reads "Go" (with aria-label="Log in"), as the old image button did. It is compact enough for the login table to fit the 192px sidebar at 768px.
  • Desktop. At 1280px, full-page screenshots are identical before and after except for two things:
    • the login box, on pages that show it (the two fixes above);
    • one 1px-wide, 180px-tall column at x=1040, where the old 141px-wide SVG in a 140px button painted past the page edge.

floaty

  • Fluid below 920px. The inline style="margin:0 auto; width:920px" on #page moves into the SCSS. Desktop rules are unchanged. Below 920px the two columns are fluid, and below 768px the page stacks: logos, title, tabs, section links, login box, page.

  • Tabs that work without a mouse. Section links used to appear only on mouse hover. Now:

    • Mouse: hover still reveals a tab's links, but only for a real mouse (pointerenter with pointerType == 'mouse').
    • Keyboard: focus reveals a tab's links. Tab and Shift+Tab are routed tab 1 → its links → tab 2 → its links, and so on. All the tabs come before all the link groups in the markup, so plain Tab used to skip past the links.
    • Touch: the first tap on a tab reveals its links instead of following the tab's link, and a second tap follows it.
  • Hover style only where hover is real. Touch browsers keep :hover on a tapped tab. The tab hover style's pale background then hid the tab's light text, so it now sits inside @media (hover: hover).

  • Checkboxes and radio buttons keep their own size (all widths). floaty's input { width: 94% } also applied to checkboxes, which stretched across their row and pushed their labels aside:

    • Student registration's "I do not need a paper schedule printed" label was squeezed against the right edge and clipped, on phones and on desktop.
    • The teacher acknowledgement's label split around a lone checkbox in the middle of the line.
    • The checkbox on the teacher biography form sat in the middle of its cell.

The rule now skips [type="checkbox"] and [type="radio"]. It's wrapped in :where(), so its specificity is unchanged and rules such as Bootstrap's .form-control still win as before. Make student and teacher registration pages fit on phones #6147 separately adds w-auto to the paper-schedule checkbox, so other themes that style every input are covered too.

  • Default homepage. Until a chapter edits it, floaty's homepage QSD showed a "Volunteer for Splash! Spring 2011" form. It posted to /volunteer/Splash/2011_Spring/signup/ with a hard-coded csrfmiddlewaretoken. It is now the same Learn/Teach/Volunteer placeholder as droplets and bigpicture, linking to /learn/, /teach/ and /volunteer/. Sites that already saved their own homepage text are unaffected.

  • Desktop. At 1280px, full-page screenshots of the catalog are pixel-identical before and after. Student registration differs only at the paper-schedule checkbox (above). The homepage differs only because of the new placeholder.

The screenshots come from a local dev site with seed_dummy_data, in headless Chromium. Each theme was compiled from its stock SCSS and given the same theme settings before and after: a site name and welcome message, and for floaty three nav sections with links. "Logged in" means student1 on /learn/SplashDev/2026/studentreg. The images were committed in 62e668e and 11e76de and deleted in the commit after each, so the PR diff contains only code. The placeholder links and the checkbox rule changed after the first set was taken; the first set doesn't show either area.

Notes for reviewers

  • circles catalog. It still overflows by 149px at 375px. That's the filter row fixed in Make student and teacher registration pages fit on phones #6147, which this branch doesn't include.
  • circles template overrides. A chapter with an override of circles main.html keeps the old markup, including <script src="/media/scripts/match_heights.js">. Once this merges, that request 404s, and the inline match_heights(...) call throws a console error inside a timeout. The page still renders, because the grid already levels the columns. If you'd rather keep match_heights.js for one release, I can restore it.
  • Pre-existing contrast. circles' grey sidebar text ($sidebarText: #999 on #eee) is low-contrast too. That variable is shared by every theme, so I left it alone.
  • Volunteer link. On main, /volunteer/ 404s on every site, so the placeholder's Volunteer link does too (as in droplets and bigpicture). Redirect /volunteer/ to /volunteer/index.html, like /learn/ and /teach/ #6151 adds the /volunteer/ → /volunteer/index.html redirect that /learn/ and /teach/ already have. As with those two, the index page itself exists only once a chapter creates it.
  • Theme customiser. No new top-level $variable: assignments were added to either theme's SCSS, so nothing new appears in the theme editor's customiser.
  • Admin toolbar. The floating 200px admin toolbar still covers content for admins on phones, as in the other themes. It's out of scope here.

Testing

  • Existing tests pass. esp/themes/tests.py: 48 passed.
  • New tests added (if applicable)
  • Manually verified, in Chromium with Playwright:
    • Sideways overflow (scrollWidth − clientWidth) on /, the catalog and student registration, at 375, 768 and 1280px. It's 0 everywhere except circles' catalog at 375px (see notes).
    • Desktop pixel diff at 1280px on those pages, as described above.
    • circles sidebar toggle on a 375px touch viewport, logged out and logged in: it starts collapsed with the page content at 257px, opens and closes on tap, and keeps aria-expanded in sync. With JavaScript disabled, the sidebar is open and the toggle is hidden.
    • circles login table fits inside the sidebar at 1280, 800, 768 and 375px.
    • floaty touch: on a 375px touch viewport, the first tap on "Teach" stays on /learn/index.html and shows the Teach links, and the second tap goes to /teach/index.html.
    • floaty mouse: hover shows a tab's links, and a click navigates straight away.
    • floaty keyboard at 1280px and 375px: Tab from "Learn" visits Learn, its 4 links, Teach, its 3 links, About, its 3 links, then the login box. Shift+Tab runs the exact reverse.
    • floaty tabs before this change. I couldn't compare tapping on a phone-sized viewport, because the old 920px layout overlapped the tabs and the tap target was covered.
    • floaty checkboxes: on 9 student and teacher pages at 375 and 1280px, no checkbox or radio button is wider than 20px. Before, there were three: the paper-schedule opt-out, the teacher acknowledgement and the bio's "hide" box, up to 637px wide. Full-page screenshots of the 6 pages without checkboxes are pixel-identical before and after.

AI Disclosure

Claude Code wrote this change, measured the layouts and took the screenshots at my request, as part of a theme responsiveness audit. The phone sidebar layout for circles, the login box fixes and the checkbox fix followed my review of earlier versions.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added responsive layouts for Circles and Floaty themes, including fluid controls and mobile single-column views.
    • Added a collapsible mobile sidebar with accessible state updates.
    • Added keyboard- and touch-friendly navigation for secondary links.
    • Reorganized the Floaty homepage into Learn, Teach, and Volunteer sections.
  • Accessibility

    • Improved login button labeling for screen readers.
    • Added clearer navigation and sidebar state handling.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved layout alignment, sizing, and behavior across screen widths.
    • Prevented hover-only interactions on touch devices.

Both themes were fixed-width float layouts (circles 800px, floaty 920px),
so on a 375px phone every page scrolled sideways by 426px and 545px.

circles
- The 800px float shell is a CSS grid with the same 200/600 split. Its
rows stretch, so the sidebar and page backgrounds stay level without
match_heights.js, which is removed (nothing else used it).
- The four SVG buttons get a viewBox and scale with their column. Below
800px each SVG overhangs its button by 1px so the button colour can't
  show at fractional widths.
- The welcome bar is centred with flexbox instead of a 600px table.
- Below 768px: one column of logo, buttons, page, then sidebar, with a
"Log in"/"Account" link at the top that jumps to the sidebar.
- Desktop (800px and up) renders as before, apart from a 1px column the
old 141px SVG used to paint past the page edge.

floaty
- The 920px inline page width moves into the SCSS. Desktop rules are
unchanged; below 920px the two columns are fluid, and below 768px the
page stacks: logos, title, tabs, section links, login box, page.
- main.js: tabs now show their section's links on keyboard focus, and on
touch screens the first tap on a tab shows its links instead of
following the tab's link (a second tap follows it). Mouse hover and
  clicks work as before.
- The tab hover style only applies on devices that can hover, so a
tapped tab doesn't keep a pale background that hides its text.
- The default homepage, shown until a chapter edits it, was a 2011
volunteer form with a hard-coded CSRF token. It is now the same
  neutral Learn/Teach/Volunteer placeholder droplets uses.

On phones the sidebar (news, contact info, login) sat at the end of the
page. It now sits under the four buttons, collapsed behind a "Recent news
& log in" ("& account" when logged in) bar that opens it in place, so the
page content still starts near the top. The "Log in" jump link is gone.

The sidebar only collapses once the inline script has run, so without
JavaScript it stays open. Desktop and tablet are unchanged.

The "User name:"/"Password:" labels were hard-coded white, which only
suited the original dark sidebar; on the default #eee sidebar they were
close to invisible. They now use color-contrast($sidebarBackground), so
they stay readable on light and dark sidebars.

The login button was an empty <button>, so it showed as a blank pill. It
now reads "Go" (with aria-label "Log in"), as the old image button did,
and is compact enough for the login table to fit the 192px sidebar at
768px.

- Tab and Shift+Tab now go tab 1, its links, tab 2, its links, and so on.
All the tabs come before all the link groups in the page, so Tab from a
tab used to reach the next tab (hiding this tab's links) first.
- Hover reveals a tab's links only for a real mouse (pointerenter with
pointerType "mouse"), so emulated mouse events on touch browsers can't
reveal them before the first-tap logic runs.
- The homepage placeholder linked to /volunteer/, which 404s; it now uses
  /learn/index.html, /teach/index.html and /volunteer/index.html like
  barebones.

floaty's 94% width rule applied to every input, so checkboxes stretched
across their row and pushed their labels aside: the student-registration
paper-schedule label was clipped at the page edge, and the teacher
acknowledgement label split around a lone checkbox.

Re CodeRabbit's outside-diff note on floaty/templates/index.html (point the Volunteer tile to /volunteer/index.html): I'm leaving it as is. /volunteer/index.html only resolves because the seed data creates that page. On a fresh site it 404s for visitors, just as /teach/index.html does; see the correction in the earlier thread on this line. #6151 fixes the missing route instead, by adding volunteer to the /learn/ and /teach/ redirect in esp/urls.py. The placeholder keeps /volunteer/ to match droplets and bigpicture. Once #6151 merges, the link behaves exactly like Learn and Teach.
