Description

On a 375px phone, several student and teacher registration pages scroll sideways or cut content off, in every theme including droplets. This fixes the ones found by a crawl of every student, teacher and public page on each theme.

Teacher class registration form (/teach/<program>/makeaclass and editclass) is 503px wide. {{ form }} renders as a two-column table that can't shrink below 491px. The Course Title input (size=50, teacherreg.py:77) is 377px wide, and the longest default Difficulty option is 374px. Droplets' existing max-width: 100% on inputs has no effect inside an auto-layout table cell.

Student catalog (/learn/<program>/catalog, also used by fillslot) is 573px wide, because the four filter selects sit in a display: flex row that doesn't wrap.

Other student and teacher pages:

Page Before, at 375px Cause
Teacher biography (/teach/<program>/biography, /teach/teachers/<user>/bio.edit.html) 136–154px too wide two-column table holding a size=50 input and a cols=60 textarea
Class documents (/learn/<program>/class_docs/<id>) ~187px too wide <table width="550">
Profile (/myesp/profile, /<learn or teach>/<program>/profile) 14–19px too wide in circles, barebones, bigpicture 40-character street address input; the "Use my parents as my emergency contact" <input type="button">, which can't wrap
Teacher section attendance (/teach/<program>/section_attendance) 37–40px too wide in every theme except droplets style="width: 400px" on the section dropdown
Student registration, floaty "I do not need a paper schedule printed" label clipped floaty's input { width: 94% } stretches the checkbox across the row

Changes:

  • forms.css: below 576px (Bootstrap's sm breakpoint), the #clsform table stacks so each label sits above its field, and text inputs, selects and textareas take the full width. The same rule now also applies to any label/field table with the new stack-on-phone class. Admins editing a class (/manage/<program>/editclass/<id>) get the same phone layout: AdminClass.editclass hands off to TeacherClassRegModule.makeaclass_logic, which renders the same teacherclassregmodule/classedit.html.
  • catalog.html: the filter row gets flex-wrap: wrap and a gap.
  • teacherbioedit.html: the biography table gets stack-on-phone.
  • class_docs.html: the table keeps width="550" and adds max-width: 100%, so each theme's own table width still wins on desktop.
  • profile.html: inputs, selects and textareas in .controls get max-width: 100%.
  • emergencycontact.html: the copy button becomes a <button>, so its label can wrap.
  • section_attendance.html: the section dropdown keeps width: 400px and adds max-width: 100%.
  • studentreg/mainpage.html: the paper-schedule checkbox gets Bootstrap's w-auto.

Apart from the rules inside the phone media query, every change only caps a width at its container, so wider screens don't change.

The screenshots come from a local dev site with seed_dummy_data, in headless Chromium. In the first four images, droplets' fixed footer is hidden, because full-page screenshots paint it mid-page; #6148 fixes that footer. The newer images were taken with #6148–#6151 merged locally, so each theme's own phone fixes are in place. The images were committed in b40365c and a56a058 and deleted in the commit after each, so the PR diff contains only code.

Desktop

At 1280px, I compared full-page screenshots of all eight pages above in six themes (droplets, floaty, circles, barebones, bigpicture, fruitsalad). 46 of 48 are pixel-identical before and after. Two differ, and both are fixes of the same bug at desktop width:

  • floaty, student registration: the checkbox no longer spans the column, so its label is on one line instead of squeezed against the right edge and clipped.
  • fruitsalad, class documents: the 550px table used to stick out past the right edge of its content box; now it fits inside.

Testing

  • Existing tests pass:
    • tests_catalog_batched.py and tests_catalog_cache.py: 24 passed.
    • teacherbiomodule.py, studentregprofilemodule.py, test_onsiteattendance.py, studentregmodules.py, tests_bio_views.py and esp/themes/tests.py: 152 passed.
    • studentreg.py and teacherclassregmodule.py: 55 passed, 1 failed. The same test fails on the previous head without this change. The failure comes from my local theme settings (full_group_name).
  • New tests added (if applicable)
  • Manually verified, in Chromium with Playwright:
    • Class form and catalog: in droplets, scrollWidth equals the viewport width on makeaclass, editclass and catalog at 320, 360, 375, 414, 575, 576, 640, 768, 1024 and 1280px.
    • Other pages, at 375px: on all eight pages in droplets, floaty, circles, barebones and bigpicture, no page scrolls sideways and no content is clipped. The only exception is circles' intentional 1px button overhang from circles, floaty: make the fixed-width themes fit phones and tablets #6150, which is inside a clipped box.
    • Desktop: the pixel comparison described above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Responsive Design

    • Improved mobile layouts for registration, profile, teacher biography, and document views.
    • Form controls, tables, selectors, and filters now adapt more effectively to narrow screens.
    • Prevented the paper schedule opt-out checkbox from stretching across the page.
  • UI Improvements

    • Improved spacing and wrapping for catalog filters.
    • Updated the emergency-contact action control while preserving its behavior and appearance.

On a 375px phone the teacher class registration form (makeaclass/
editclass) was 503px wide and the student catalog 573px wide, so both
pages scrolled sideways in every theme, including droplets.

- forms.css: below 576px, stack the #clsform table so each label sits
above its field, and let text inputs, selects and textareas take the
full width. The table could not shrink before because the Course Title
input (size=50) and the longest Difficulty option are each ~375px wide.
- catalog.html: let the filter row wrap instead of forcing all four
  selects onto one line.

Desktop rendering is unchanged (pixel-identical at 1280px).

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds narrow-screen layout rules for forms, tables, filters, and selectors. It also adjusts checkbox sizing and changes one input button to a button element without changing its handler or label.

Registration control updates
esp/templates/program/modules/studentregcore/mainpage.html, esp/templates/users/profiles/emergencycontact.html
The paper schedule checkbox uses w-auto. The emergency-contact control changes to a button element while retaining its handler, styling, and label.

…ges fit on phones

- Teacher biography: its label/field table stacks on phones, through a new
.stack-on-phone class that shares the class form's rule in forms.css.
- Class documents: the 550px table can shrink to the screen.
- Profile: inputs sized by character count (the 40-character street
address) can't exceed their column, and the emergency-contact copy button
is a <button> so its label wraps.
- Section attendance: the 400px section dropdown can shrink to the screen.
- Student registration: the paper-schedule checkbox keeps its natural
width in themes that size every input (floaty clipped its label).
