Description

In the droplets theme, the fixed navbar and footer cover part of the page at every width below 980px, and the navbar also covers a strip at desktop widths.

Phones and tablets (≤979px). headerResize()/footerResize() in main.html deliberately set no body padding below --width-breakpoint ($navbarCollapseWidth, 979px). Bootstrap 2's responsive CSS made fixed navbars static below 980px, which is presumably why the guard exists. Bootstrap 5's .fixed-top/.fixed-bottom stay fixed at every width, so:

  • the 54px navbar covers the top 54px of every page, and
  • the 58px footer stays fixed over the end of the page and permanently uses 58px of the screen. On student registration it completely hides the "I do not need a paper schedule printed for me" checkbox (screenshot below).

Desktop (>979px). headerResize() measured #navbar, the inner .container-fluid (46px), rather than the <nav> (54px). That left 8px of the header under the navbar.

Changes:

  • droplets/scss/main.scss: below $navbarCollapseWidth, the navbar and footer become position: static, and their containers span the full width with no side padding. This replaces a 768–979px rule that set width: 100% on those containers, which had no effect under Bootstrap 5. The selectors match the shared .footer-container .navbar.fixed-bottom rule in theme_editor/scss/_theme_layout_compat.scss, so this rule wins by source order. Because the rule uses the variable, a chapter that has customised navbarCollapseWidth gets the switch at its own value.
  • droplets/templates/main.html: headerResize() measures the <nav> with outerHeight(), the same way footerResize() already measures the footer.

Above 979px nothing changes except the 8px fix. The bars stay fixed and the JS padding logic is the same.

Screenshots (droplets)

Phone (375px), top of the home page:

Phone top of page, before and after

Phone (375px), end of the student registration page. Before, the fixed footer hides the last checkbox:

Phone end of page, before and after

Tablet (768px). The navbar is already expanded at this width (navbar-expand-md) and covered the top of the header:

Tablet, before and after

Desktop (1280px), top 150px at full size. Body padding goes from 46px to 54px:

Desktop, before and after

The screenshots come from a local dev site with seed_dummy_data, in headless Chromium, with the theme compiled from the stock droplets SCSS. The images were committed in 47e3162 and deleted in the next commit, so the PR diff contains only the two theme files.

Not changed

  • The navbar still expands at 768px (navbar-expand-md), while the bars only become fixed above 979px. Between 768 and 979px you now get an expanded navbar in the page flow. That no longer covers anything, but the two breakpoints still differ. Aligning them (for example navbar-expand-lg with a 992px default) would change the tablet navbar for every chapter, so I left it for a separate decision.
  • The default homepage's Volunteer link (/volunteer/) 404s on main. Redirect /volunteer/ to /volunteer/index.html, like /learn/ and /teach/ #6151 fixes that in esp/urls.py. I briefly changed the link here, then reverted it, so the net diff doesn't touch index.html.

Testing

  • Existing tests pass. esp/themes/tests.py: 48 passed.
  • New tests added (if applicable)
  • Manually verified. On / I measured the bars' computed position and how much of the header sits under the navbar at 320, 375, 575, 767, 768, 978, 979, 980, 992, 1280 and 1440px:
    • The switch from static to fixed happens between 979 and 980px.
    • The header is never covered, and no width scrolls sideways.
    • Desktop padding equals the nav's height (54px).
    • With the phone menu open (169px tall), the page moves down rather than being covered.
    • /learn/SplashDev/2026/studentreg gives the same results at 375, 768 and 1280px.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved responsive behavior for top and bottom navigation bars on smaller screens.
    • Navigation containers now use the available screen width without unnecessary maximum-width or horizontal-padding restrictions.
    • Corrected page spacing beneath the fixed top navigation to match its actual height.
    • Added fallback spacing when the navigation bar is unavailable.

Below $navbarCollapseWidth (979px) main.html deliberately adds no body
padding, because under Bootstrap 2 the fixed navbars became static at
that width. Bootstrap 5's .fixed-top/.fixed-bottom stay fixed at every
width, so on phones and tablets the 54px navbar covered the top of every
page and the 58px footer sat over the end of the content.

- main.scss: below the collapse width, make the navbar and footer static
and let their containers span the full width. This replaces a 768-979px
rule that no longer did anything under Bootstrap 5.
- main.html: measure the fixed-top <nav> itself for the desktop padding,
as footerResize() already does. It measured the inner #navbar (46px)
and left 8px of the header under the 54px navbar.

📝 Walkthrough

The responsive navbar and footer now use static positioning below the collapse width. Body top padding uses the enclosing navbar’s outer height. Homepage navigation links now target explicit index.html paths.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in esp/esp/themes/theme_data/droplets/scss/main.scss: Added a $navbarCollapseWidth media query that makes the top navbar and bottom footer flow statically below the collapse width and removes container width limits and horizontal padding. The former min-width: 768px condition was removed, so the container adjustments now apply across all viewports below the collapse width.
  • observed — Modified behavior in esp/esp/themes/theme_data/droplets/templates/main.html: headerResize now measures the enclosing fixed-top navbar’s outer height, including its padding and borders, with a #navbar outer-height fallback, instead of using #navbar’s inner height for body top padding.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the desktop media query above the collapse width.

At exactly 979px, both media queries match. The navbar and footer become static, but #navbar and #footer retain the desktop 1rem horizontal padding. This creates a mixed breakpoint state instead of the narrow full-width layout. The resize handlers already treat 979px as narrow, so move only the desktop query boundary.

/…/index.html only exists once a chapter creates that page, so it did not
fix the Volunteer 404 on a fresh site. The redirect in #6151 fixes
/volunteer/ instead, for saved homepages too.

Re CodeRabbit's outside-diff note on main.scss:268 (both queries match at exactly 979px): confirmed. At a 979px viewport, the bars are already static from this PR's max-width rule, but the older min-width: $navbarCollapseWidth block still gives #navbar/#footer 16px of side padding. The JS already treats 979px as narrow, so body padding isn't affected. The only effect is a little extra padding at that single width. Moving that block to ($navbarCollapseWidth + 1px) is correct, and I'll include it in this PR's next code push.
