Description

SolverMuJoCo locked kinematic roots by adding a 1e10 armature to their DOFs. That armature dominates trace(M), which MuJoCo uses to scale its convergence tolerance, so a single kinematic body loosened the solve for the whole scene. #3270 worked around this by overriding stat.meaninertia, but MuJoCo Warp 3.17 drops stat.meaninertia and scales termination by trace(d.M) directly (google-deepmind/mujoco_warp@7fa413ec). The workaround then has nothing left to correct.

This PR holds kinematic roots with a weld to the world instead of armature:

  • The weld has neither stiffness nor damping. Rather than pulling the root toward a pose, it locks the root's acceleration, so the root keeps the pose and velocity pushed from joint_q/joint_qd through the step under every integrator, and coasts between pushes with update_data_interval > 1 as before. The weld is active exactly while the root is kinematic, per world, so body_flags toggles eq_active.
  • MuJoCo computes its inverse-weight constants with the kinematic roots locked by a temporary armature of 1e4 times their own inertia, after which the authored armature is restored and the lock is removed from stat.meaninertia. Weld, contact, and joint-limit regularization therefore treat a kinematic root as immovable, as the armature did, while the mass matrix used for stepping and for the convergence tolerance stays physical. A perfectly rigid lock would stall MuJoCo Warp's float32 CG solver.
  • Every movable root gets an inactive weld, so any root can still be made kinematic at runtime. An inactive weld adds no constraint rows. Making a root kinematic that was dynamic in every world at solver creation is deprecated; kinematic_switchable_roots=False opts into the future behavior, in which only roots kinematic at creation get a weld.
  • njmax reserves the six rows of each weld whose root is kinematic in some world but not the first. A notification that activates more welds than njmax has room for warns.
  • Kinematic roots without mass or inertia, which MuJoCo cannot simulate as movable bodies, become mocap bodies like fixed roots.
  • Kinematic roots keep their authored joint_armature; the damping-ratio armature workaround from Preserve MJCF position actuator damping ratios #4755 is removed.

Also fixed along the way:

  • With use_mujoco_cpu=True, fixed-root poses edited through joint_X_p/joint_X_c were ignored. This overlaps Preserve MJCF mocap body semantics #4498, so whichever lands second drops or merges its fragment.
  • With sleeping enabled, bodies resting on a moving fixed or massless kinematic root stayed asleep, because MuJoCo does not wake trees on a moving mocap body.

Behavior compared with the armature

Probes on the MuJoCo Warp backend, comparing against main:

main (armature) this PR
Kinematic root tracking within a step (Euler, implicitfast, RK4) exact exact (< 0.1 µm)
Heavy pendulum on a 0.8 kg kinematic base, angle after 0.4 s 1.7609 rad 1.7606 rad (Newton solver), 1.78 rad (CG)
Joint limit at 0.3 rad on a 10 g kinematic base, peak angle 0.4375 rad 0.4375 rad
80 kg box resting on a 0.1 kg kinematic platform, penetration 0.11 mm 0.11 mm
trace(M) with a kinematic root inflated by 1e10; meaninertia overridden physical

Without kinematic bodies, step time is unchanged (humanoid and ant at 4096 worlds, 10 and 50 free boxes per world); memory grows by up to 3% for scenes in which every body is a free root.

#4872 (exporting exact zero masses) has landed; since massless kinematic roots now become mocap bodies instead of hitting its compile error, this PR drops them from its changelog fragment.

New feature / API change

SolverMuJoCo(kinematic_switchable_roots=False) drops the welds of roots that are dynamic at creation. To start such a root dynamic and make it kinematic later without the deprecation warning, mark it kinematic before creating the solver:

import newton
import warp as wp
from newton.solvers import SolverMuJoCo

builder = newton.ModelBuilder()
crate = builder.add_body(xform=wp.transform((0.0, 0.0, 1.0), wp.quat_identity()), is_kinematic=True)
builder.add_shape_box(crate, hx=0.1, hy=0.1, hz=0.1)
model = builder.finalize()
solver = SolverMuJoCo(model, kinematic_switchable_roots=False)

# Start dynamic.
body_flags = model.body_flags.numpy()
body_flags[crate] = int(newton.BodyFlags.DYNAMIC)
model.body_flags.assign(body_flags)
solver.notify_model_changed(newton.ModelFlags.BODY_PROPERTIES)

# Later: take over the crate's motion.
body_flags[crate] = int(newton.BodyFlags.KINEMATIC)
model.body_flags.assign(body_flags)
solver.notify_model_changed(newton.ModelFlags.BODY_PROPERTIES)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Movable root bodies can be prepared to switch between kinematic and dynamic states. Authored armature is preserved; roots without mass or inertia are handled as mocap bodies and cannot become dynamic.
    • The option to prepare roots for switching can be disabled.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed-root pose updates now track correctly, including collision handling and waking sleeping bodies when a root moves.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified kinematic-root behavior, switching requirements, and limitations.
  • Deprecations
    • Making a root kinematic after solver creation is deprecated if it was dynamic at creation. Mark it kinematic before creating the solver, then switch it to dynamic if needed.

SolverMuJoCo locked kinematic root DOFs with a 1e10 armature. MuJoCo
sums the mass-matrix diagonal to scale its solver termination, so the
sentinel loosened convergence for the whole model; Newton patched
stat.meaninertia around it, which upstream MuJoCo Warp is removing.

Follow MuJoCo's idiom for scripted bodies instead: each root that is
kinematic in some world at conversion gets a mocap target and a weld
equality that is active exactly while the body is kinematic. Every
step the target moves to the prescribed pose, led by the weld's
damping-to-stiffness ratio so the weld does not drag the body toward
rest against the mocap's zero velocity. Kinematic roots keep their
authored armature, so the meaninertia two-pass and its dampratio
bookkeeping go away.

Toggling body_flags remains supported for roots that have a target;
making any other root kinematic now raises instead of silently
recompiling topology.
Kinematic weld targets are only allocated for roots that are kinematic
at solver construction, so a root that starts dynamic could never be
switched to kinematic. Add a mujoco:kinematic_switchable body
attribute that reserves the target and its weld while leaving the
weld inactive until body_flags marks the root kinematic.
Users who toggle many bodies at runtime should not have to tag each
one with mujoco:kinematic_switchable. Add a solver option that gives
every movable root a mocap target and inactive weld; it stays opt-in
because the targets change the exported MuJoCo model.

body_flags edits after finalize bypass the builder's root-only check,
and a kinematic non-root body would be silently ignored by the weld
scheme. Reject it alongside roots that have no target.
Placing the mocap targets needs the same per-joint pass over Newton
joint_q/joint_qd that convert_warp_coords_to_mj_kernel already makes,
so compute them there instead of in a separate per-step launch.

Targets must keep following the prescribed state on steps where
update_data_interval skips the state push; otherwise the weld pulls the
body back to a stale pose. Those steps run the same kernel with the
state writes disabled.

Cover the remaining kinematic cases: every root joint type tracking
between pushes on both backends, a sleeping payload woken by a moving
platform, and target updates inside a captured step.
The kinematic weld is compliant, so a root's own weight leaked through
it: a rotating free or ball root with an offset COM drifted from its
prescribed pose between state pushes. A kinematic body should not feel
gravity at all, so set its MuJoCo body_gravcomp to 1 while kinematic
and restore the authored mujoco:gravcomp when it turns dynamic. Inertial
updates rewrite gravcomp, so the override is reapplied after them.

Native MuJoCo skips gravity compensation when the compiled model has no
compensated body and only recounts that during constant recomputation,
which a flag toggle does not trigger. Compile the massless mocap
targets with gravcomp so a root that starts dynamic is still covered.
Auditing the weld scheme against the armature it replaced found
regressions and silent failures:

- A kinematic root without mass or inertia has a singular mass matrix
once the armature is gone, so its DOFs get a unit armature floor and
  a warning.
- The weld relied on REFSAFE to raise its 1e-6 time constant to
2 * dt; with REFSAFE off it exploded. Set the time constant from the
  step size instead.
- RK4 averages forces over stages the target lookahead did not
account for, letting payloads slip. Lead RK4 targets by another half
step and soften their weld, whose stiffness its stages destabilize.
- MuJoCo sizes njmax from the constraints active at construction, so
welds of roots that start dynamic overflowed once enabled. Reserve
their rows by default and warn when an explicit njmax cannot hold
  them.
- mujoco:kinematic_switchable on a body that cannot be kinematic was
  ignored silently; warn instead.

Document the errors, warnings, and remaining real-mass limitations.
MuJoCo refuses movable bodies without mass and inertia. A kinematic
root only escaped that check because the 1e10 armature regularized
it, and with the weld it now produces NaNs. Newton exports zero-mass
bodies without an inertial so MuJoCo compiles them from geom-inferred
inertia, and only publishes the zero afterwards, so MuJoCo cannot
catch it. Apply MuJoCo's rule to kinematic roots at conversion instead
of padding them with an arbitrary armature.
Rejecting massless kinematic roots asked users for a mass that only
tunes MuJoCo contact softness. A massless root can never be dynamic,
since MuJoCo requires mass of movable bodies, so it needs no weld: it
is MuJoCo's infinite-mass scripted body, a mocap, just like a fixed
root whose joint is the identity.

Route both through one path. Massless kinematic roots export as mocap
bodies without MuJoCo joints, and every mocap body driven by a Newton
joint is posed from X_p * X_j(q) * inv(X_c) in the state-push kernel,
with weld targets additionally leading by the weld lookahead. This
replaces the notify-only fixed-root mocap kernel, which never reached
native MuJoCo, so CPU fixed roots ignored joint_X_p edits.

Kinematic state now passes through before the read-back skips joints
without MuJoCo coordinates, and those joints are counted with loop
joints when sizing native MuJoCo coordinates. Switching a massless
kinematic root to dynamic raises.
upstream/main resolves imported actuator damping ratios against
physical inertia by temporarily lifting the 1e10 kinematic locking
armature (newton-physics#4755). Kinematic roots now keep their authored armature and
are held by a weld, so the regular constant refresh already resolves
against physical inertia and the workaround has nothing to undo.
Switching a root to kinematic at runtime only works in SolverMuJoCo if
the root was prepared when the solver was created, but the general
kinematic docs did not say so and the error only explained the rule.

Document the restriction and the other user-visible consequences of
welded kinematic roots where kinematic bodies are introduced, add a
tested example of opting a body in, and show how to opt in imported
bodies through the builder or the model. Split the error into one for
non-root bodies, which can never be kinematic, and one for unprepared
roots that names the attribute to set.
example_basic_plotting writes solver_convergence.png into the working
directory during tests, and it was swept into an earlier commit.
Compensating a kinematic root's weight only changed results inside
MuJoCo on steps where update_data_interval skips the state push, and
it cost a per-root gravcomp override, its reapplication after inertial
updates, a CPU sync, and a massless gravcomp body to keep native MuJoCo
from skipping the computation. It also changed the gravity acceleration
reported to coupled solvers. The body's weight now acts through the
weld like any other load, consistent with kinematic roots keeping their
real mass.
The per-body mujoco:kinematic_switchable attribute already lets users
opt any root into runtime switching, including every body of an
imported asset, so a solver-wide flag only added a second public way
to do the same thing.

Classify opted-in bodies once: the attribute is honored on movable
roots with mass and inertia and reported once otherwise. The flag made
every massless body, including welded sensor links and fixed roots,
trigger a misleading "cannot be switched" warning.
Compute each mocap target from eval_joint_child_state instead of a
second implementation of root-joint FK and its free-joint COM shift,
and keep the kinematic weld bookkeeping arrays private; only tests
read them.
Letting a root that starts dynamic become kinematic later needed a
public mujoco:kinematic_switchable attribute, its classification and
warnings, tests, and documentation, and would need a weld budget or
per-world equality ids to scale. Nothing exercises it: Isaac Lab sets
kinematic flags only before the solver exists, and Newton's
cross-solver toggle test starts from a kinematic root.

Keep switching roots that were kinematic in some world at solver
creation, which needs no extra machinery, and drop the attribute. A
root can still start dynamic by being created kinematic and switched
to dynamic after the solver exists; the error for other roots says so.
The attribute-based implementation remains on
adenzler/mujoco-kinematic-weld-switchable for comparison.
MuJoCo does not wake bodies resting on a moving mocap body, and Newton
only wakes trees whose qpos it changes. A massless kinematic root, now
a mocap body, therefore left a payload hovering in its sleeping island
when it moved away; fixed roots moved through joint_X_p had the same
gap. Flag worlds whose fixed or massless kinematic roots moved while
posing them and wake those worlds. Weld targets are excluded: their
welded root changes qpos and wakes its neighbors through contact.

Also address review findings: give kinematic weld targets names that
cannot collide with user bodies, document that mocap bodies follow
every step regardless of update_data_interval, correct the docstring of
the state push and a misleading comment, and add the missing test
docstrings.

Trim the kinematic tests: replace the sleeping test, which passed
without this change, with the mocap-root wake regression; run RK4 and
REFSAFE only on the free joint; drop the payload test the tracking test
already covers; check the mass-matrix trace instead of stat.meaninertia,
which MuJoCo Warp is removing; and move the fixed-root mocap test next
to the other joint-frame update tests.
Posing mocap bodies on every step, including steps where
update_data_interval skips the state push, changed what that option
promises: with 0, Data was documented to never update after
initialization. The kinematic targets and mocap roots are part of the
state Newton pushes, so on skipped steps they now stay stale like the
rest of it, as the armature-locked roots coasted on their last pushed
velocity before. Joint-frame notifications still pose them.

Test the weld lookahead on what it guarantees instead: the pose MuJoCo
integrates over one step from a pushed state.
The weld's damping braked the kinematic body against the mocap
target's zero velocity, and the target led the prescribed pose by the
damping-to-stiffness ratio only to cancel that. A direct-form solref
with zero damping removes the drag itself: a target at the pushed pose
leaves the body unforced at the start of the step, which is where Euler
and the implicit integrators evaluate it. RK4, which averages forces
over the step, still leads by half a step. Tracking, slip, and
penetration are unchanged.

A joint-frame notification has no state, so posing every mocap from
model.joint_q moved weld targets and massless kinematic roots back to
their initial pose until the next state push. Re-pose only fixed roots
there, whose pose depends on the joint frames alone; the armature-locked
roots this replaces were not touched by notifications either. Classify
moved mocap roots by the weld-target flag rather than a zero lead,
which RK4-free targets now share.
MuJoCo divides direct-form stiffness by dmax squared, so scaling it by
dmax made the weld softer than the documented two-step time constant.

REFSAFE does not clamp direct-form stiffness, and the undamped weld
stays stable under RK4 at two steps; RK4 keeps the softer weld because
it tracks the prescribed motion more closely there.
The articulation concepts page described the workaround for starting a
kinematic-capable root dynamic without pointing to the doctested
example in the MuJoCo solver docs.

Explanation

The title "Hold MuJoCo kinematic roots with welds instead of armature" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives both center on replacing the 1e10 armature lock for kinematic roots with world welds in SolverMuJoCo. The title is short, specific, and does not use vague terms. It omits secondary changes such as mocap handling for massless roots, fixed-root pose sync, and the deprecation of late kinematic switching, but the request allows for that.

Remove the stale reference to synthetic kinematic armature.

This PR removes KINEMATIC_ARMATURE. Kinematic roots now keep their authored joint_armature. Line 423 still says that damping resolution excludes "synthetic armature used to lock kinematic bodies". That armature no longer exists, so the sentence describes behavior that the code does not implement.

The same problem exists in docs/concepts/articulations.rst at line 403. The "Mass matrix / constraint role" row still says "Solver-dependent infinite-mass approximation along kinematic DOFs". The new text at lines 452-463 of that file says the opposite for SolverMuJoCo. Add a MuJoCo exception to that row.

Precompute the static masks used by eager body-flag validation.

Each eager BODY_PROPERTIES notification now copies several arrays from the device to the host. It reads self._notify_body_flags.numpy(), self.model.joint_child.numpy() twice, and self._kinematic_target_jnt.numpy(). The old body-properties path was kernel-only.

joint_child and _kinematic_target_jnt do not change after construction. Workflows that notify BODY_PROPERTIES on every reset pay for these extra copies and synchronizations each time.

Compute the targeted-body mask once in _convert_to_mjc, next to _kinematic_needs_target. Then only body_flags needs a host read per notification.

♻️ Proposed refactor
-            kinematic = (self._notify_body_flags.numpy() & int(BodyFlags.KINEMATIC)) != 0
- if self._kinematic_target_jnt is not None:
-                targeted = self.model.joint_child.numpy()[self._kinematic_target_jnt.numpy().ravel()]
- kinematic[targeted] = False
+            kinematic = (self._notify_body_flags.numpy() & int(BodyFlags.KINEMATIC)) != 0
+ invalid_mask = kinematic & self._kinematic_needs_target # targeted bodies cleared at construction

Clear the targeted bodies in _kinematic_needs_target at construction. In that case, kinematic[targeted] = False is not needed here.

This follows the review guideline: "Cost: What does the change add to the default path? ... steady-state costs need evidence."

Rewrite the changelog sentence and include massless kinematic roots.

The sentence "when a fixed root moved through joint_X_p moves away from under them" has two verbs for one subject, so it is hard to parse. The entry also omits part of the fix. The wake path in convert_warp_coords_to_mj_kernel flags every non-lead mocap root. That includes massless kinematic roots that move through joint_q, as test_moving_massless_kinematic_root_wakes_sleeping_payload shows.

Rewrite the changelog entry for SolverMuJoCo to state clearly that, with
sleeping enabled, bodies can remain asleep after either a fixed root or a
massless kinematic root moves away from beneath them; avoid the current
sentence’s ambiguous verb structure.

On CPU, wp.array.numpy() aliases device memory, so the later fill_
overwrote the saved flags and the solver under test saw every world
kinematic.
Making a root kinematic that was dynamic at solver creation used to
work and now raised, which breaks existing users without a deprecation
period. Give every movable root a mocap target and an inactive weld so
body_flags can still switch it; an inactive weld adds no constraint
rows, so robots pay one extra body each.

The late switch emits a deprecation warning, and
kinematic_switchable_roots=False opts into the future behavior, which
prepares only roots kinematic at creation and keeps the exported model
free of unused targets. Structural comparisons against native MuJoCo
models opt out for that reason.

njmax still reserves rows only for roots kinematic in some world at
creation; a notification that activates more welds than njmax has
headroom for warns instead of overflowing silently.
The mocap-target welds were soft: with MuJoCo's impedance a light
kinematic root yielded to heavy dynamic children and to contacts, so a
pendulum on a kinematic base swung visibly differently than on a fixed
base and contacts sank deep into light kinematic platforms. Their
stiffness, RK4 lead, and step-size rescaling only mattered for the
pose error inside a step, which a pushed state starts at zero.

Weld each root to the world without stiffness or damping instead. That
locks the root's acceleration, so it keeps the pushed velocity through
the step under every integrator and coasts between pushes like the
former armature did. Scaling down the body_invweight0 of kinematic
bodies makes MuJoCo regularize their welds and contacts as nearly
infinite mass while the mass matrix stays physical. The factor is not
zero because perfectly rigid rows stall MuJoCo Warp's float32 CG
solver.

No mocap target bodies are needed anymore, so prepared roots only add
an inactive equality to the exported model.
Scaling only the kinematic body's own inverse weight left the
constants of its dynamic descendants at floating-base values: joint
limits on a light kinematic base, whose force-space gains are converted
through dof_invweight0, went soft enough to swing far past the limit.

Lock the welded roots with an armature of 1e4 times their own inertia
while MuJoCo recomputes its constants, then restore the authored
armature and remove the lock from the mean inertia. Inverse weights,
and with them weld, contact, and limit regularization, now match the
former armature behavior, while stepping and the solver tolerance see
the physical mass matrix. The moderate ratio keeps the stiff rows
conditioned for MuJoCo Warp's float32 CG solver, which a perfectly
rigid lock stalls.

Body-flag switches recompute the constants, as the armature did.
The switchable-roots docstring still described mocap targets, and the
native backend's mean-inertia correction must tolerate MuJoCo builds
that drop the statistic.
Massless kinematic roots now become MuJoCo mocap bodies, so they no
longer hit the compile error that fragment describes.

save_to_mjcf wrote the inactive welds of every movable root, which the
MJCF importer turns into fixed joints, so a saved model no longer
round-tripped. They are Newton runtime machinery, so drop them from the
saved spec.

Also let tests that count exported equalities opt out of the welds, and
assert the deprecation warning that accompanies the njmax headroom
warning so the test passes under strict warnings.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Reject heterogeneous root representations before MuJoCo export.

ModelBuilder.replicate copies one source builder, but add_builder can place different builders in different world contexts. Therefore, worlds can have different root masses or flags.

For such a root, any_world selects the mocap representation for every world. The dynamic world is then treated as mocap and can fail during the later ModelFlags.BODY_PROPERTIES notification. This is not a construction-time rejection. Reject heterogeneous root representations before export with a clear compatibility error.

The native MjData sync detected a template-only MjData by comparing its
qpos size with the mapped coordinate count. With only massless
kinematic roots, which become mocap bodies, both are zero, so the sync
iterated every world's joints over template-sized mappings and read out
of bounds. Detect the template from the joint mapping instead.

Also name the actual cause when a root that is a massless kinematic
mocap body in one world is dynamic in another.
