[fix] Cross-references keep edited text and break at spaces - #1239
InDesign keeps text typed over a cross-reference’s generated text until the cross-reference is updated, and the page number in it stays live. The IDML importer dropped that text and rebuilt it from the format. A credits list whose format reads Page : Last, First. "." YYYY. Volume X, issue Y. therefore showed those placeholders instead of the names and dates typed in.
CrossRef gains text (the edited text, with for the live page) and page (the page last shown).
Import keeps saved text only when it no longer reads the way its format produces it. Cross-references nobody edited still update from their format.
IDML export writes edited text back with InDesign’s XRefPageNumber variable.
xref.setFormat drops the edits, as InDesign does.
Edited text whose destination is gone shows its saved page instead of “??”.
Spaces in a cross-reference’s text are word spaces the line may break at. Before, the text was set as one unbreakable piece, so long ones broke mid-word. Page numbers and text variables still never break.
Tests: edited_text_is_recognised (doc), keeps_edited_cross_reference_text (IDML import, fallback page, round trip) and cross_reference_text_breaks_at_its_spaces (compose, fails on main).
Edited cross-reference text is preserved when documents are imported from or exported to IDML.
Page numbers in edited cross-references remain live and update when the destination is available. If it is missing, the saved page number is shown instead.
Bug Fixes
Cross-reference text now wraps at spaces rather than breaking within words.
Changing a cross-reference’s format regenerates its text using the selected format.
InDesign keeps text typed over a cross-reference's generated text (until the
cross-reference is updated), with its page number still live. The IDML
importer dropped that text and generated it again from the format, so a
credits list whose format reads "Last, First. ... YYYY. Volume X, issue Y."
showed those placeholders instead of the names and dates typed in.
- CrossRef gains `text` (edited text, `<pageNum />` for the live page) and
`page` (the page last shown). Import keeps saved text that no longer
reads as its format produces it; export writes it back with InDesign's
XRefPageNumber variable. Setting a format drops the edits, as InDesign does.
- Edited text whose destination is gone shows its saved page, not "??".
- Spaces in a cross-reference's text are word spaces the line may break at
(it was set as one unbreakable piece, so long ones broke mid-word).

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Cross-references now retain edited text and the last displayed page through IDML import and export. Composition uses the current destination page when available, otherwise the saved page. Cross-reference text also breaks at spaces.
Changes: Cross-reference text retention and display
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Cross-reference state and format updates crates/doc/src/xref.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/xref.rs
CrossRef stores optional edited text and page values. Helpers identify text that matches format literals and expand page-number tokens. Format changes clear stored text.
IDML import and export crates/idml/src/import/story.rs, crates/idml/src/export/story.rs, crates/idml/src/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md
Import retains saved text and page values when saved text differs from the selected format. Export preserves edited text and emits live page-number variables. Tests cover edited and unedited references through a round trip.
Cross-reference text composition crates/compose/src/xref.rs, crates/compose/src/shape.rs, crates/compose/src/tests.rs
Composition expands edited text with the current destination page or the saved page when the destination is unavailable. Replacement glyphs preserve spaces as line-break points.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 97b42
Edited cross-reference text can be silently lost on IDML import when it only adds text around the format's literal parts. Unedited cross-references with default quoted formats can also freeze into fixed text after a round trip and stop updating from their destination. Fix the format-matching logic before merging; the tracked-change case is a smaller gap.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 97b42
The change remains document-scoped, with no new privilege or cross-document access identified. However, an ordinary round trip can incorrectly turn generated wording into a persistent override, preventing later destination edits from updating it. Resetting the format provides a recovery path.
Retained concerns
Low · architecture · inferred: The generated-versus-edited classification is not stable under the application's own round-trip representation. Default quoted formats generate typographic quotes, but matches_format requires the format's straight-quote literals. On reimport, generated wording can therefore become a durable edited-text override and stop following destination wording changes. The base regenerated that content instead. Format reset can clear the override, limiting the issue to recoverable document-state ownership rather than a security-boundary failure.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new state-integrity exposure is cross-reference content within a document and its subsequent exports. Following the inspected target-resolution and package-writing paths did not establish a new cross-document or service-level authority transition.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Imported override segments reach the existing XML serializer as text nodes, not raw XML. The serializer escapes text and attributes, while page markers produce fixed variable elements. Compared with the base's generated-text emission, the new path does not bypass that output-encoding control.

Preserve edited cross-reference text until its target is available.
matches_format searches only for ordered literals. Therefore See "2. Intro" on page <pageNum /> matches the Full Paragraph & Page Number format. The importer then sets text to None, and export regenerates the reference without See .
The importer cannot compare the complete generated text at this point. It classifies the source while target is still 0, but paragraph, paragraph-number, anchor-name, chapter, and file-name values come from Document::xref_values(target). Keep the saved source text until the hyperlink pass assigns the target. Then compare it with the selected format expanded from those destination values, using the saved page value for <pageNum /> and the same quote normalization as the exporter. Set text to None only when that complete comparison matches. Otherwise retain the saved text and page.
This preserves ordinary references with dynamic paragraph or title values and retains user-added prefix or suffix text. The current behavior permanently loses those words during import and export, so this is a major data-integrity issue in the supported IDML import workflow.

The token-membership check does not prove that the lines preserve the expected output. For example, it would accept duplicated issue and a missing final token because every remaining token is still in words. The line-count check does not close this gap.
Rejoin the lines and compare the result with the expected text. The original final period remains after the cross-reference, so keep the period in format!("See {shown}.").

Add a direct structural assertion for the edited cross-reference export.
keeps_edited_cross_reference_text checks the model after import_idml(&export_idml(&d)), but it does not inspect the generated Story XML. Assert the edited CrossReferenceSource directly, including its TextVariableInstance with ResultText="7" and the expected Content runs. Scope the assertion to the edited cross-reference because the story contains two cross-references.

Add coverage for unsupported cross-reference source nesting.
xref_saved_text is a changed import boundary. It returns without an error when a CharacterStyleRange chain exceeds depth 16, so the importer can silently truncate saved text. Existing cross-reference tests cover normal nesting and shallow saved text only. They do not establish the fallback for unsupported nesting.
Add a deeply nested CharacterStyleRange source and assert the intended fallback, such as an error, warning, or explicitly truncated text.

Match the page variable by AssociatedTextVariable.
Name.contains("XRefPageNumber") also matches user-defined variables. The importer can then convert their text to <pageNum /> and store their ResultText as the page. Use the exact built-in reference and add a fixture with a similar name but a different associated reference.

Compare saved text with the complete generated text before discarding it.
matches_format only finds the format’s literal parts in order. For the format Page <pageNum />, saved text such as Page 7, revised passes that check. The importer then sets text to None and permanently loses , revised. Compare against the generated cross-reference text, with page-number values accounted for, before treating saved text as unedited.

Read saved text inside tracked-change wrappers.
If a Change element wraps a Content or TextVariableInstance inside a CharacterStyleRange, this extractor skips it. The story importer already handles Change wrappers at Lines 294-304, so this path can import the cross-reference marker while losing its edited text and saved page. Recognize exported typographic quotes as generated text.
The default formats contain straight quotes, but xref::expand exports typographic quotes. On reimport, matches_format therefore returns false, so the importer stores text: Some(...) and page: Some("?") for an unedited cross-reference.
A resolved destination can still provide a live page number, but the false edited state prevents the generated destination text from updating.
Normalize the format before extracting its literal parts. The fix belongs in crates/doc/src/xref.rs, not at crates/idml/src/export/story.rs:56.
